Praia da Marinha is a sandy cove framed by ochre cliffs on the Benagil coast, municipality of Lagoa, and its calling card is a pair of twin rock arches you can see from the viewpoint the moment you arrive. To enjoy it properly, expect a steep stone staircase down to the sand, go when the tide is going out and park early: after 10am in July and August the dirt car park fills up and the beach feels small.
Why is Praia da Marinha so famous?
Praia da Marinha is famous for its two twin rock arches and the honey-coloured cliffs that close it off on both sides, a landscape that appears in almost every postcard photo of the Algarve. It sits on the Benagil coast, in the municipality of Lagoa, and is repeatedly named one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal and Europe in international travel guides.
What sets it apart isn't size — the sand is small and almost disappears at high tide — but the combination of sculpted limestone rock, clear water and a rocky seabed teeming with life. To the left as you arrive, one of the arches forms the silhouette of two stone bridges over the water, the detail that made it iconic. To the right, the cliff carries on in a lacework of caves and columns you can explore by kayak or by swimming.

This fame has a practical flip side: in high season the beach receives a lot of people on a reduced stretch of sand. Anyone after the Marinha of the photographs — soft light, wide sand, few crowds — has to play with the time and the tide, and that is exactly what the chapters below break down.
How do you get to Praia da Marinha?
You can only reach Praia da Marinha by car, via a minor road that leaves the Benagil and Caramujeira area, in the municipality of Lagoa. There is no direct bus link to the beach and the end of the line is a dirt car park at the top of the cliff, from where you walk down to the sand.
From Faro Airport, expect around 50 minutes to 1 hour by car. The nearest accommodation bases are all just a few minutes away: Carvoeiro about 6 km away, Armação de Pêra about 4 km, and the town of Lagoa some 8 km. In either case, the journey takes less than 15 minutes.
| Starting point | Approx. distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Faro Airport | ≈ 50 km | 50–60 min |
| Carvoeiro | ≈ 6 km | 10–12 min |
| Armação de Pêra | ≈ 4 km | 8–10 min |
| Lagoa (town) | ≈ 8 km | 12–15 min |
| Portimão | ≈ 18 km | 20–25 min |
The car park is free but small and without shade. In July and August it fills up by 10am; anyone arriving later ends up parking on the verge of the access road and walking several minutes in the sun. To understand transport alternatives and when it's worth renting a car, the guide How to get to and around the Algarve covers the subject in detail.
How do the staircase, tides and best times work?
The descent to the sand is by a steep stone staircase, with uneven steps, set against the cliff. It's only a few dozen steps, but enough to make the beach impractical for prams, wheeled suitcases or reduced mobility. Carry only the essentials on your back and wear firm-soled footwear.
Why does the tide change everything at Marinha?
The tide decides the size of the beach. At low tide, the sand widens, natural pools by the rocks are exposed and you can walk along the base of the cliff to the rock arch at the left-hand point. At high tide, the water reaches almost to the staircase and the usable sand shrinks to a narrow strip, especially on spring tides. That's why checking the Hydrographic Institute's tide table before setting off makes all the difference.
What is the best time of day to visit?
The best time is before 10am or after 5pm. Early morning catches the empty sand, the golden light on the cliffs and the car park still with spaces; in the late afternoon the beach empties and the tide tends to be going out towards the evening. Avoiding midday in July and August spares you the crowd and the peak of the heat, when the cliff reflects the sun and there is almost no natural shade.
- Outgoing tide + early morning: the ideal combination — wide sand, calm water, few people.
- High tide at midday in August: the worst scenario — little sand and lots of people.
- Late afternoon: photogenic light and a beach emptying out, great for those staying nearby.
- Easterly wind days: rougher sea at the point of the arches; stick to the central area.
In short, Praia da Marinha rewards those who plan. Crossing the tide table with your arrival time turns a crowded beach with no space into a wide, peaceful cove — and it's the difference between spending the day there or leaving frustrated.
Is it worth snorkelling at the rock arches?
Yes, Praia da Marinha is one of the best snorkelling spots in the central Algarve, thanks to the clear water and the rocky seabed full of fish by the cliffs. Visibility is greater on the eastern side of the beach, near the first rocks, where the seabed alternates pale sand and limestone blocks covered in algae.

To enjoy it safely, bring a mask, snorkel, fins and water shoes — the rocks have slippery patches and a few sea urchins. Stay close to the shore, avoid days with strong swell and keep your distance from the kayaks and tour boats that circulate between Marinha and the neighbouring cave of Benagil. The rock arches can be swum through at low tide, but only in a calm sea and never alone.

Those who prefer to discover the caves by boat will find regular departures from Carvoeiro and from Benagil. Before booking a tour, it's worth understanding the new access rules for the Benagil cave, which are explained in our dedicated guide Benagil: how to visit the cave in 2026.
What is the Seven Hanging Valleys trail like?
The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail starts at Praia da Marinha and runs 5.7 km, one way, along the top of the cliffs to Praia de Vale Centeanes, near Carvoeiro. It is one of the most beautiful coastal trails in Europe and crosses viewpoints, old sinkholes and hidden coves, always with the sea in view.
It's a moderately difficult route: it has climbs and descents, stretches of dirt track and exposed sections by the edge of the cliff, with no railings for most of the way. It isn't technically hard, but it demands closed footwear, enough water and care with children. It takes around 2 to 3 hours one way, which is why many choose to walk halfway and turn back.
- Park at Praia da Marinha and set off along the top of the cliff, heading west.
- Follow the trail signs, always keeping to the land side of the markers near the edge.
- Make the most of the viewpoints over the rock arches and the hidden beaches along the way.
- Finish at Praia de Vale Centeanes or turn back halfway if you prefer a shorter walk.
For those who love walking, this is just a taster of what the region offers on foot. The article Trails and hikes in the Algarve brings together routes from the rocky coast to the hills, and the hub best beaches in the Algarve helps you string several beaches into a single cliff itinerary.
Which neighbouring beaches go well with Marinha?
Praia da Marinha sits at the centre of a stretch of rocky coast full of coves, so it's easy to combine two or three beaches in the same day. Its most immediate neighbours are Praia de Benagil, with the famous cave, and Praia de Vale Centeanes, at the other end of the Seven Valleys trail.
| Beach | Distance from Marinha | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| Benagil | ≈ 1.5 km (trail/road) | Cave accessible by boat, kayak or swimming |
| Vale Centeanes | ≈ 5.7 km (end of trail) | Tucked-away sand between cliffs, fewer people |
| Carvoeiro | ≈ 6 km | Urban beach with facilities, restaurants and boardwalks |
| Armação de Pêra | ≈ 4 km | Long stretch of sand, ideal for families with children |
The Benagil cave is the must-stop of the area, but access has changed in recent years to protect the structure and visitors. Anyone wanting to go in should know the current rules and the tour options before arriving — all of that is detailed in the guide Benagil: how to visit the cave and in the hub Benagil and the caves.
If you prefer beaches with wide sand to spend the day with children, Praia da Rocha and Armação de Pêra itself are a few kilometres away and have far more beach facilities. Where to stay near Praia da Marinha?
The best bases to stay near Praia da Marinha are Carvoeiro, Armação de Pêra and the town of Lagoa, all less than 15 minutes' drive from the beach. Carvoeiro is the most charming and central; Armação de Pêra has wide sand and good beach facilities; Lagoa is a little more inland, with generally more contained prices.
What kind of home to choose in the area?
For couples and small families, an apartment with a pool in Armação de Pêra or Lagoa works well — it's near the beach, has a kitchen for preparing meals and costs less than a villa. Those travelling in a group or wanting privacy tend to prefer a villa or house with a private pool on the outskirts of Carvoeiro.
In our inventory, three 2-bedroom apartments with a pool in Armação de Pêra (between 68 and 79 m²) work very well as a base for exploring Marinha and the Benagil coast, and a 3-bedroom apartment of 130 m² in Lagoa gives larger families room to spare. They are professionally managed homes, with organised check-in and support in Portuguese.
