Vilamoura sits in the municipality of Loulé, in the Central Algarve, about 15 km from Faro Airport — some 20 minutes by car. It's the largest marina in Portugal, ringed by golf courses, waterside restaurants and the Praia da Marina, a Blue Flag beach. It runs all year round and is so sought-after because it packs, within a short radius, what most families and couples want: a safe beach, total convenience and a leisure offer without needing a car for everything.

What is Vilamoura and why is it so sought-after?

Vilamoura is a planned tourist resort in the municipality of Loulé, in the Central Algarve, built from the 1970s around an artificial marina. Unlike historic towns such as Tavira or Alvor, it has no old houses and no fishing-village feel: it's a resort from the ground up, with wide streets, quality complexes, golf and the marina as its central square. It's that convenience — everything organised, clean and close — that makes it the most sought-after destination for those who want a hassle-free holiday.

The location helps a lot. Vilamoura is about 15 km from Faro Airport, which translates into 20 to 25 minutes by car or transfer. It's right up against Quarteira (10 minutes' walk along the seafront) and a short hop from Almancil, Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago. This proximity forms the so-called Golden Triangle, the most premium area of the Algarve, which we detail in the Golden Triangle guide.

Who Vilamoura is for

Vilamoura fits three very clear profiles: families wanting a safe beach and services on hand, couples after restaurants and the marina, and golfers who come for the courses. Anyone after a small, authentic town is better served in the Sotavento — as we explain in the Sotavento guide. But if the aim is comfort, buzz and golf a few minutes away, few places in the country compete with Vilamoura.

The Vilamoura marina: the heart of the town

The Vilamoura marina is the largest in Portugal and the meeting point of the whole town, with around 800 berths for leisure boats and yachts. Around it gather dozens of restaurants, bars and terraces, a waterside promenade and the casino. This is where you dine, have a drink at the end of the day and catch the boat trips out to the coast's caves.

The main boat trips of the Central Algarve set off from the marina, including the dolphin-watching outings and the tours that head up the coast to Benagil. It's worth knowing, before booking, that the famous Benagil cave can only be visited by sea with a licensed operator — entry by swimming or by private boat has been restricted by the authorities. We gathered the current rules in the guide on how to visit Benagil.

What to do at the marina

  • Boat trips: dolphins, coast and caves, with departures several times a day in high season.
  • Waterside dining: the highest concentration of restaurants in the town, from fresh fish to international cuisine.
  • Praia da Marina: a Blue Flag urban beach, right beside the berths.
  • Casino and nightlife: the busiest hub of nightlife in Vilamoura.

Even if you stay in a complex further out, the marina is where you'll probably spend much of your evenings. That's why many visitors prefer to stay 10 to 15 minutes' walk from it — close enough to get home without a car after dinner.

Golf in Vilamoura: which are the courses?

Vilamoura is one of the largest golf destinations in Europe, with five courses concentrated a few minutes from each other: the Old Course, the Pinhal, the Laguna, the Millennium and the Dom Pedro Victoria, the last one of the best-known in the country and a regular venue for professional events. For a golfer, that means playing several different layouts in the same week without long drives.

Vilamoura has five golf courses a short distance apart, between pine woods and palm trees.

Golf also shapes the accommodation offer: many complexes are built next to the courses, with villas and apartments overlooking the fairways. If golf is the central reason for the trip, it makes sense to choose a home near the course you'll play most often. We compare the region's best layouts in the golf in the Algarve guide and gather accommodation options near the courses.

Outside the hot season, golf helps fill Vilamoura in the low season, especially between October and March, when players from northern Europe seek out green fairways and mild temperatures. It's one of the reasons the town doesn't close in winter — a theme we go deeper into in the piece on the Algarve out of season.

What are the beaches of Vilamoura and around?

The most central beach is the Praia da Marina (also called Praia de Vilamoura), of golden sand and a Blue Flag, right beside the berths. A few minutes away is the Praia da Falésia, one of the longest and most photographed in the Algarve, with more than 5 km of sand at the foot of reddish cliffs. To the east, the seafront connects to the Praia de Quarteira, urban and well equipped.

For families with small children, the Praia da Marina and Quarteira win on proximity and facilities; for those who want to walk and escape the crowds a little, the Falésia is unbeatable. If the priority is the prettiest beach possible, it's worth getting to know the coves of Carvoeiro and the Praia da Marinha, a little further west, which we list in our guide to the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve.

Is Vilamoura good for families, couples or golfers?

Vilamoura serves all three profiles well, but for different reasons. For families, the town is flat, safe and has a Blue Flag beach with services — add private pools in the complexes and water parks a short distance away. For couples, the marina offers restaurants, terraces and nightlife without having to drive. For golfers, the five courses a few minutes away cover the whole week.

Vilamoura for families

The combination of a safe beach, flat streets and complexes with a pool makes Vilamoura one of the best bases in the Algarve for holidays with children. There are water parks a few minutes away and the marina makes for an easy stroll at the end of the afternoon. To compare with other areas designed with kids in mind, see our guide to the Algarve with children and the best areas for families.

Vilamoura for couples and groups

For couples, the marina is the draw: waterside dining, a drink at the end of the night and zero parking to hunt for. For groups of friends or stag/hen dos, the offer of bars and the casino make Vilamoura livelier than the calm Tavira. If you're after romance or a party above all, we have dedicated guides to couples and to groups and stag/hen dos.

How much does it cost to stay in Vilamoura?

Vilamoura is, on average, more expensive than Albufeira or Quarteira, being a premium area and much sought-after in high season. The price of a holiday home depends above all on three factors: the season (July and August cost far more than June or September), the type of home (an apartment is much cheaper than a villa with a private pool) and how far ahead you book. We don't publish a fixed value because the price varies with the dates — confirm on each home's spec sheet.

As a general reference, June and September are usually the best time for the budget, with the sea still warm and fewer people. To get to grips with the price structure and how to save, we have two dedicated pieces: how much it costs to rent a holiday home in the Algarve and the family holiday budget. And on when to book, the month-by-month calendar shows you the best moment to commit.

Direct booking: saving on the commission

The homes we present have direct booking on Homing, our official partner — without the platform commission from Booking, Airbnb or Hotels.com, with no hidden fees and with support in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish. In practice, the same home tends to come out cheaper on a direct booking than on the big portals. We explain the difference in detail in the piece direct booking vs Booking and Airbnb.

There's also the municipal tourist tax, charged per night per person in Loulé as in most Algarve municipalities. It's a small amount, but it's worth budgeting for — we gathered the up-to-date figures in the guide to the tourist tax in the Algarve.

What villas and apartments are there to rent in Vilamoura?

In Vilamoura and neighbouring Quarteira, our inventory covers everything from apartments with a shared pool to villas with 3 bedrooms and a private pool. If a private pool is non-negotiable, it's worth seeing our guide to villas with a private pool in the Algarve and the rentals in Vilamoura section, where we gather every home available in the town. When the Vilamoura inventory sells out in high season, Quarteira is the nearest alternative and usually has better prices.

How to get to and around Vilamoura?

You reach Vilamoura mainly via Faro Airport, 15 km away — about 20 to 25 minutes by car, transfer or taxi. By car, the A22 (Via do Infante) exit for Boliqueime or Loulé leaves you a few minutes away. There are also buses connecting Faro, Quarteira and Albufeira to Vilamoura, though the car remains the most comfortable way to explore the region.

Within the town, much is done on foot: the marina, the Praia da Marina and much of the restaurants are concentrated and well linked by promenades. To reach the Falésia or to dine out at night, a car helps, but it isn't essential if you stay near the marina. We gather all the transport options in the guide how to get to and around the Algarve.

For those who want to combine Vilamoura with other areas, the central location is an advantage: in under an hour you reach Lagos, Carvoeiro or the towns of the Sotavento. It works well as a single base for a whole week, as we suggest in the 7-day Algarve itinerary.
