Which is the best area to stay in the Algarve?
The best area depends on the kind of holiday you want. For a first visit with postcard beaches and everything to hand, the Centro (Albufeira, Carvoeiro or Vilamoura) is the safest bet. For cliffs, surf and dramatic scenery, choose the Barlavento (Lagos, Sagres). For warm sea, wide sands and family calm, the Sotavento (Tavira, Monte Gordo).
| Coastline | Atmosphere | Beaches | Sea (summer) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Barlavento | Cliffs, surf, young | Dona Ana, Camilo, Marinha | 21–23 °C | Surf, couples, scenery |
| Centro | Touristy, lively | Falésia, Rocha, Benagil | 21–23 °C | First time, families, golf |
| Sotavento | Calm, authentic | Tavira Island, Monte Gordo | 22–25 °C | Families, warm sea, quiet |
Whichever area you choose, there are villas, townhouses and apartments to rent, with direct booking on Homing.
Centro: iconic beaches and the widest choice
The Centro — Albufeira, Loulé/Vilamoura, Lagoa/Carvoeiro and Silves/Armação de Pêra — is the tourist heart of the region and draws the most demand. This is where the most photographed beaches sit, such as Praia da Marinha, Benagil and Praia da Falésia, plus the widest choice of dining, nightlife and golf.
Albufeira is the liveliest, with the Strip and dozens of beaches (it is the Portuguese municipality with the most Blue Flags, 26 in 2025). Carvoeiro and Vilamoura are more refined and family-friendly — Vilamoura combines marina, beach and around 16 golf courses. It is the right area for those who do not want to compromise on anything.

Barlavento: golden cliffs, surf and the Costa Vicentina
The Barlavento (west) — Lagos, Portimão, Aljezur and Sagres — is the side of carved cliffs, hidden coves and the wild nature of the Costa Vicentina, a surfing paradise.
Lagos has a young atmosphere and the most scenic beaches (Dona Ana, Camilo); Sagres is the “end of the world”, with surf and sunsets at Cabo de São Vicente. The water is a little cooler (21–23 °C at the peak of summer) and the Atlantic swell larger — great for surfing, less so for bathing with small children.

Sotavento: warm sea, wide sands and the Ria Formosa
The Sotavento (east) — Tavira, Olhão, Faro and Monte Gordo — has the longest sands, the warmest water in mainland Portugal and the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa. It is calmer, more authentic and cheaper.
In summer, the water of the Sotavento reaches 22–25 °C — 2 to 4 °C above the Barlavento — thanks to the sheltered coast and shallow lagoons. Tavira is the most charming destination; Monte Gordo the most family-friendly, with its wide, safe beach. See our comparison of Barlavento and Sotavento.

Where to stay according to your travel profile
First time: Carvoeiro or Albufeira. Families with children: Vilamoura, Tavira or Monte Gordo (calm sea) — see the best areas for families. Couples: Lagos or Carvoeiro. Surf and nature: Sagres or Aljezur. Golf: Vilamoura or Quinta do Lago. Without a car: towns with a pedestrian centre and a beach nearby, such as Lagos, Albufeira or Tavira.
If you travel as a group or family, look for accommodation with a private pool: it is the single feature that most improves a stay in the Algarve summer.
Distances from Faro airport to each destination
Faro airport is the gateway to the Algarve and sits centrally: most towns are less than an hour away by car. These are the average driving distances and times (A22 motorway) from the airport to each destination — handy for deciding where to stay and how much to budget for transfers.
| Destination | Coastline | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Faro (city) | Sotavento | 7 km | ~10 min |
| Olhão | Sotavento | 10 km | ~12 min |
| Quarteira | Centro | 22 km | ~25 min |
| Vilamoura | Centro | 25 km | ~30 min |
| Tavira | Sotavento | 35 km | ~30 min |

| Carvoeiro | Centro | 55 km | ~45 min |
| Portimão | Barlavento | 65 km | ~50 min |
| Lagos | Barlavento | 90 km | ~1 h |
| Sagres | Barlavento | 113 km | ~1 h 20 |
Algarve climate month by month: which is the best month?
The Algarve has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Highs rise from 16 °C in January to 28 °C in August, and rain concentrates between November and February. The sea temperature ranges from about 15 °C in winter to 20–22 °C at the end of summer (warmer in the Sotavento). This table helps you choose the right month:
| Month | Max °C | Min °C | Sea °C | Rain | Atmosphere |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 16 | 8 | 15 | High | Calm, mild |
| February | 16 | 8 | 15 | High | Calm |
| March | 19 | 11 | 16 | Medium | Spring, empty |
| April | 20 | 12 | 16 | Low | Ideal and quiet |
| May | 23 | 14 | 17 | Low | Excellent |
| June | 26 | 17 | 19 | Very low | Great, before the peak |
| July | 28 | 20 | 20 | Almost none | Peak, busy |
| August | 28 | 20 | 22 | Almost none | Peak, warm sea |
| September | 26 | 18 | 21 | Low | Excellent, warm sea |
| October | 22 | 16 | 20 | Medium | Mild, empty |
| November | 19 | 12 | 18 | High | Calm |
| December | 17 | 9 | 16 | High | Calm, mild |
In practice: May, June and September are the best months — warmth, a pleasant sea and far fewer people than in July and August. For longer stays at a good price, April and October are unbeatable.
When to go and how to get to the Algarve
The Algarve has a Mediterranean climate, with more than 300 days of sun and around 3,000 hours of light a year. Average highs hover around 28 °C in August and 16–17 °C in January, when the region stays mild. May, June and September offer the best balance: warm weather, a pleasant sea and far fewer people than in July and August.
Access is mostly via Faro airport, central to the region: Albufeira is ~35 km away, Lagos ~90 km and Tavira ~35 km. Renting a car almost always pays off, to explore several beaches and towns during your stay.
