Which are the best areas of the Algarve for families?
The best areas for a family holiday combine a calm-sea beach, accommodation with a pool and services a short distance away. Carvoeiro, Vilamoura and Tavira lead the way, for the safety of their beaches and the choice of villas and apartments for families.
| Area | Coastline | Why | Beach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carvoeiro | Centro | Sheltered beach, quiet, villas | Praia do Carvoeiro |
| Vilamoura | Centro | Marina, everything organised, golf | Praia da Marina, Falésia |
| Tavira / Cabanas | Sotavento | Warm, calm sea, wide sands | Ilha de Tavira |
| Monte Gordo | Sotavento | Wide sand, warm water | Praia de Monte Gordo |
| Albufeira | Centro | Plenty of choice, parks and attractions | Falésia, Oura |
Sotavento: a warm, calm sea for young children
For families with young children, the Sotavento is one of the best destinations in the Algarve. The water reaches 22–25 °C in summer (2 to 4 °C above the Barlavento), it is calmer and the sands are wide and flat. Tavira, Cabanas and Monte Gordo have safe beaches on the Ria Formosa, ideal for the little ones to play in safety.

Carvoeiro and Vilamoura: beach, pool and everything close
Carvoeiro has a sheltered central beach, a quiet atmosphere and many villas with a pool just minutes away — and it is close to the Marinha and Benagil. Vilamoura offers a marina, broad beaches, golf and plenty of apartments and townhouses, in a safe and organised setting, perfect for families who want everything to hand.
What to look for in a family holiday home
For a relaxed holiday with children, look for: a private pool (safety and fun away from the crowds), outdoor space, air conditioning, a fitted kitchen and being close to the beach and the supermarket. Always check the bed layout and the real capacity on the listing before booking. A villa or townhouse with a pool usually pays off compared with a hotel: more space, more privacy and a better price per person.

What to do with children in the Algarve
Beyond the beach, the Algarve has plenty for families. The water parks around Albufeira and Lagoa (Slide & Splash, Aqualand, Zoomarine) are summer classics. In Vilamoura, the marina and the dolphin-watching boat trips delight the little ones; on the Ria Formosa, the island trips and birdwatching combine fun and nature. There is also Lagos Zoo, caves and easy trails. A house with a private pool takes care of the rest: the days when the children just want to stay and play at home.
Algarve beaches to go to with children
The best beaches for families have wide sand, a calm sea and a Blue Flag: Praia da Luz (Lagos), Meia Praia, Praia de Monte Gordo and the beaches of the Ilha de Tavira. See them all in the beach guide and choose by the sand and the access.
