How many days do you need to get to know the Algarve?
It depends on what you want to see, but there is a golden rule: choose a base and do not move house every day. The Algarve is compact and can be crossed by car in little over an hour, so it pays to settle in one or two spots and make round trips. For a weekend, a base in the Centro is enough; for a week, you see the best of one coastline; for two weeks, you cover the whole region at leisure.
| Time | What you can see | Suggested base |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend (2–3 days) | Beaches and caves of the Centro | Albufeira or Carvoeiro |
| One week (7 days) | Centro + Barlavento OR Sotavento | 1 central base + 1 day further afield |
| 10–14 days | The whole region, from Sagres to the Guadiana | 2 bases (1 per coast) |
To choose where to settle, first read the guide on where to stay in the Algarve and the comparison Barlavento or Sotavento.
Weekend itinerary (2 to 3 days)
With little time, focus on the Centro, between Albufeira, Lagoa and Carvoeiro, where the most photographed beaches sit a short distance apart. A plan that works: day 1, arrive and relax on the beach near your base (Galé, Carvoeiro); day 2, Praia da Marinha and the boat trip to the Benagil cave; day 3, the old town and a final dip before leaving.
It is an ideal itinerary for a short break and adapts well to couples and families. See our day-by-day weekend itinerary in the Algarve, with times and distances.

7-day itinerary: the essential Algarve
A week is the ideal length to get to know the Algarve well without rushing. Based in the Centro, alternate beach days with one or two longer outings (to Lagos and Sagres in the west, or to Tavira and the Ria Formosa in the east). This is a skeleton you can adapt:
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive at Faro, pick up the car, settle in and a beach near the base |
| 2 | Praia da Marinha + the Benagil cave by boat or kayak |
| 3 | Lagos: Ponta da Piedade, Dona Ana and Camilo beaches, old town |
| 4 | Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente; sunset at the “end of the world” |
| 5 | A calmer day: pool, Carvoeiro on foot and Algar Seco |
| 6 | Tavira and the Ria Formosa barrier island, in the east |
| 7 | Market, shopping and a last beach before leaving |

A road trip from coast to coast
Those with more time (10 to 14 days) or who like a change of scene can do the Algarve from end to end, from Sagres and the Costa Vicentina in the west to Vila Real de Santo António and the Guadiana in the east. The formula that spares you packing and unpacking every day is to use two bases: one in the Barlavento/Centro (Lagos or Carvoeiro) and another in the Sotavento (Tavira).
Along the way, swap the golden cliffs of the west for the sands and sandbar islands of the east, and the surf of Sagres for the calm of the Ria Formosa. See the Algarve road trip, coast to coast. To sort out the car and the tolls, the car hire and tolls guide.
Itineraries by travel profile
Families: a base in Vilamoura, Tavira or Monte Gordo (calm sea), with wide beaches, water parks and boat trips — see the best areas for families. Couples: Lagos or Carvoeiro, with cliff beaches, dinners and a sunset in Sagres. Surf: Sagres and the Costa Vicentina, with open-sea beaches. Golf: Vilamoura or Quinta do Lago, combining rounds with the beach.
Whatever the profile, start by settling on the base and the number of days — the rest falls into place around that. For activity inspiration, see what to do in the Algarve.
