The best area to stay in Lagos depends on what you're after: the historic centre is the choice for those who want everything on foot, with restaurants, bars and the marina at the door; Meia Praia and its stretch of sand over 4 km long suit families who want space and calm sea; and the area of Dona Ana, Camilo and Ponta da Piedade is for those who come for the golden cliffs. Lagos sits about 63 km from Faro Airport, in the Barlavento, with over 30,000 inhabitants — a town big enough to have everything and small enough to cover on foot.
Where to stay in Lagos?
For most visitors, the best base is the historic centre of Lagos, inside or beside the walls, where you have restaurants, grocers, the marina and the buses to the beaches a short walk away. Those travelling with children or staying one or two weeks tend to prefer Meia Praia, for its wide sands and calm. Those who come for the cliffs and the turquoise sea choose the upper area of Dona Ana and Camilo, even knowing that at night they'll need a car.
Lagos is one of the most complete towns in the Barlavento: it has a historic city, a marina, postcard beaches and easy access to the Costa Vicentina to the west. It sits about 63 km from Faro Airport, which works out to 50 to 60 minutes on the A22 motorway. It has over 30,000 inhabitants, so it keeps a life of its own out of high season — something not every Algarve town manages.

Before choosing an area, decide one thing: are you going to rent a car or not? That answer filters half the options. Without a car, the centre and Meia Praia cover everything. With a car, Luz, Burgau and Salema open up, and you can even use Lagos as a starting point for a seven-day Algarve itinerary.
What is staying in the historic centre of Lagos like?
The historic centre is the liveliest and most practical area of Lagos: everything is on foot, from the fish taverns to the marina, by way of Praça Gil Eanes and the nightlife. It's the best choice for couples, groups of friends and those travelling without a car. The trade-off is the noise on summer nights and the difficult parking inside the walls.
Who the historic centre is for
It works above all for those who value street life and want to eat out every night without depending on a car. The marina, across the pedestrian bridge, is the starting point for the boat trips to Ponta da Piedade and the caves. The urban beaches — Batata, Pinhão and Estudantes — are 5–10 minutes' walk from the centre, which is rare in the Algarve.
- Ideal for: couples, groups, first visit, those who don't rent a car.
- Beaches on foot: Batata, Pinhão and Estudantes (5–10 min).
- Advantage: restaurants, bars and market a few steps away.
- Drawback: more noise at night and tricky parking in summer.
If you're after a compact apartment for two, the centre is where you'll find the most offer at reasonable prices. For larger groups, it's worth looking slightly outside the walls, where there are villas with pool a few minutes by car but still close to the town's life.
Is Meia Praia and the marina worth staying at?
Meia Praia is the right area for those who want a wide beach, calmer sea and quiet at the end of the day. It's the longest stretch of sand in Lagos — running over 4 km northeast of the marina, towards Alvor — and rarely gets crowded even in August, because there's space for everyone. The marina area, between the centre and Meia Praia, combines the best of both worlds: you walk to the restaurants and you're steps from the beach.

Meia Praia for families
The shallow sea and soft sand make Meia Praia one of the safest beaches in Lagos for children, in line with what we recommend in the Algarve with children guide. There's beach support, car parks and even a regional train stop linking to the centre. For stays of one or two weeks with kids, this area is hard to beat.
The offer here leans towards apartments and complexes with a pool, many a few minutes from the sand. Those who prioritise the beach first thing in the morning, with no car to park, gain precious time by staying on this side — and can still walk or take the train to dine in the centre at night.
Dona Ana, Camilo and Ponta da Piedade: what is staying there like?
The upper area of Dona Ana and Camilo, south of the centre, is where the most beautiful and photographed cliffs of Lagos are, including Ponta da Piedade. It's a residential area, quieter and greener, ideal for those who come for the scenery and want to wake up near the turquoise sea. The trade-off is clear: you gain views and quiet, but you need a car for dinner out at night.

Praia de Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo are among the most spectacular in the Algarve, with ochre cliffs and transparent water. You go down by stairways, which calls for some mobility — it's not the obvious choice for those bringing a pushchair. Ponta da Piedade, about 2.5 km from the centre, offers the best sunset in the area and trails along the top of the cliffs.
Villas with pool dominate this area, many with a sea view. It's the right area for couples and small groups who want privacy and scenery, without minding taking the car to reach the buzz of the centre in five minutes. Are Praia da Luz and Burgau worth it as an alternative?
Yes, if you're after calm and still want Lagos nearby. Praia da Luz, about 68 km from Faro Airport and some 10 minutes by car from the centre of Lagos, is a quiet seaside village, with a sheltered bay, a seafront promenade and family restaurants. Burgau and Salema, further west (72 and 77 km from the airport), are old fishing villages that keep an unhurried pace, perfect for those fleeing the crowds.
| Area | Distance to airport | Atmosphere | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centre of Lagos | ~63 km | Lively, urban | Couples, groups, no car |
| Meia Praia | ~62 km | Calm, wide sands | Families, long stays |
| Dona Ana / Camilo | ~63 km | Residential, cliffs | Couples, sea views |
| Praia da Luz | ~68 km | Quiet seaside village | Families, peace and quiet |
| Burgau / Salema | ~72–77 km | Fishing village | Those fleeing the crowds |
Luz is especially practical because it has its own shops and easy beach access, without the bustle of the Lagos centre. For those who want the rental at Praia da Luz with the best of both worlds — quiet and city 10 minutes away — this is the bet. Burgau and Salema call for more car independence, but reward you with small beaches and dinners of fish just off the boat.
Which is the best area of Lagos for each profile?
There's no best area in absolute terms — there's the best for your type of trip. Couples and groups who want nightlife stay in the centre; families with children choose Meia Praia or Luz; those who come for the cliffs and photography go for Dona Ana; and those after silence head to Burgau or Salema.
Lagos for couples
Couples gain most by staying in the centre or the Dona Ana area. The centre gives dinners and bars on foot; Dona Ana gives sunsets at Ponta da Piedade and villas with a private pool. For getaway ideas for two, see the Algarve for couples guide.
Lagos for families
Families should favour Meia Praia or Praia da Luz, for the calm sea, wide sands and beach support. An apartment with a pool near the sand avoids long walks with tired children and spares the stress of parking.
Lagos for groups
Groups of friends do best in a villa on the outskirts, with a pool and barbecue, a few minutes from the centre. That way they have a shared space by day and the Lagos night a short distance away. See also the Algarve for groups guide.
Whatever the profile, decide the area first and only then the home. The area sets the rhythm of your holiday; the home only the comfort within it. And if you're still torn between Lagos and another destination, our comparison Albufeira or Lagos helps you decide.

How to reach Lagos and get around the town?
Lagos sits about 63 km from Faro Airport, with a direct link on the A22 motorway (Via do Infante) in 50 to 60 minutes. There's also a regional train on the Algarve Line, which ends in Lagos and connects to Faro, Albufeira and Tavira, plus coaches. Within the town, the centre and the marina are done on foot; for the more distant beaches and for Luz, a car helps.
Do you really need a car in Lagos?
If you stay in the centre or at Meia Praia, it's not essential: you have beaches, restaurants and the train at hand. If you choose Dona Ana, Luz, Burgau or Salema, or if you want to explore the Costa Vicentina and Sagres, the car stops being optional. For the full transport picture, see how to reach and get around the Algarve.
- From the airport: ~63 km, 50–60 min by car on the A22.
- Train: the regional line ends in Lagos, with a link to Faro and the Sotavento.
- On foot: centre, marina and urban beaches are sorted without a car.
- With a car: Luz, Burgau, Salema, Ponta da Piedade and Sagres within reach.
The ideal combination for many is to stay in the centre or at Meia Praia and rent a car only for two or three days of trips to the Costa Vicentina and the neighbouring villages. That way you avoid the difficult summer parking and only pay for the car when it really pays off.
What time of year to stay in Lagos?
Summer (June to September) is the peak in Lagos, with warmer sea, busy beaches and high prices; May, June and October offer the best balance of good weather, pleasant sea and fewer people. In winter, the town keeps a life of its own thanks to its over 30,000 inhabitants, unlike many Algarve places that close out of season.
If you want to choose dates by your wallet, our calendar of when to book your Algarve holiday shows the swing month by month. For those who can't do without a warm-sea beach, late spring and early autumn are the best window in Lagos.
Whatever the month, Lagos pays off: in winter it swaps the beach for the cliff trails and the food, and in high season it delivers the full package of sun, turquoise sea and nightlife. Set the season first, then the area, and finally the home — in that order you avoid budget surprises.
