When is the best time to visit the Algarve?

For most travellers, the best time is the shoulder season — May, June and September. You get the best balance of warm weather, a pleasant sea, beaches with room to spare and prices much lower than at the August peak. June and September are perhaps the two best months of the year: the sea is already (or still) warm, the sun is reliable and yet the August crowd is missing.

The Algarve climate month by month

The Algarve has more than 300 days of sun a year and one of the mildest climates in Europe. In summer (June to September) highs hover around 26–28 °C and it barely rains; in winter (December to February) it stays mild, with 16–17 °C by day and cool nights. Spring and autumn are bright and comfortable. This chart shows the average air and sea temperature through the year.

Note the sea temperature: it only turns truly inviting from June to October (20–22 °C). In May the water is still cool (~18 °C), more for a quick dip than long swims — especially in the Barlavento, where the water is a few degrees cooler than in the Sotavento.

High, mid and low season: prices and crowds

The difference in price and atmosphere between seasons is huge. In August, the whole Algarve is full and accommodation prices can be 2 to 3 times those of winter. In June and September you get practically the same weather for a good deal less. From November to March, outside New Year, it is the cheapest and quietest time — perfect for remote work, golf or long stays.

To understand in depth how prices vary by area, house type and season, see our guide to how much it costs to rent a holiday home in the Algarve. For winter, the guide to the Algarve out of season; and for the year-end, New Year in the Algarve.

Best month for your travel profile

Families with children: June and early September — a warm sea, long days and fewer people than in August. Couples: May, June or October, for quiet and better prices. Surf: autumn and winter (September to March), when the Atlantic swell is bigger on the west coast and at Sagres. Golf: spring and autumn (March–May, October–November), with ideal temperatures to play. Quiet and budget: from November to February, outside New Year.

To choose the right area too, cross-reference the season with the best areas for families and the comparison of Barlavento or Sotavento.

Events and festivals in the Algarve through the year

There is always something happening in the Algarve, and choosing the month around the right festival can change the trip. These are some of the best-known recurring events — always confirm the exact dates for each year with the organiser or the council.

When to book to catch the best prices

The rule is simple: the earlier, the better, especially for the most in-demand dates. For July, August and New Year, book 2 to 4 months ahead — the best houses, especially villas with a pool, sell out first. For the shoulder season and winter there is more flexibility and, at times, good last-minute deals.

Booking direct on Homing is usually cheaper than on Airbnb or Booking, because there is no platform commission. Open the listing for any house to see the real price for your dates, with no hidden fees.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the hottest month in the Algarve?

July and August, with average highs of around 28 °C and the sea at 21–22 °C. They are also the busiest months with the highest prices, so June and September offer a very similar climate with fewer crowds.

Can you go to the beach in the Algarve in May or October?

Yes, with sun and mild days (20–23 °C). In May the water is still cool (~18 °C) and in October it cools down from mid-month. They are great months for walks and the beach in the sun, with shorter swims.

When is the best time to visit the Algarve out of season?

From October to April (outside New Year). The climate stays mild, the beaches empty out and prices are the lowest of the year — ideal for quiet, golf, hiking and long stays. See the guide to the Algarve out of season.

When is high season in the Algarve?

From June to September, peaking in July and August. That is when there is the most guaranteed sun and everything open, but also more heat, people and the highest prices. Book well ahead for these dates.

Is the sea warm in the Algarve?

It depends on the month and the coast. In summer, the Sotavento (Tavira, Monte Gordo) reaches 22–25 °C, warmer than the Barlavento (21–23 °C). Outside summer the water is colder, typical of the Atlantic.

When is the best time for surfing in the Algarve?

From autumn to early spring (September to March), when the Atlantic swell is bigger, especially on the west coast (Sagres, Arrifana, Amado). In summer the waves are smaller, better for beginners.

How far ahead should I book a house in the Algarve?

For July, August and New Year, 2 to 4 months ahead. For the shoulder season and winter there is more availability and flexibility. Booking direct on Homing avoids the Airbnb and Booking commissions.
