The Algarve has three large-scale water parks: Aquashow in Quarteira, Slide & Splash in Lagoa and Aqualand in Alcantarilha (municipality of Silves). All three open mainly from May/June to September, all sit less than 45 minutes from Faro Airport and are surrounded by towns with a strong rental offer, which lets you make a day of the park without long journeys.
This guide explains where each park is, what sets each one apart, how long it takes to reach them from the main towns, and in which areas it's worth renting a home to have a park on your doorstep.
How many water parks does the Algarve have?
The Algarve has three big water parks: Aquashow, in Quarteira (municipality of Loulé); Slide & Splash, in Estômbar/Lagoa; and Aqualand, in Alcantarilha, municipality of Silves. They are the region's three landmark venues for slides, wave pools and lazy rivers, and they're all in the Centre and the Barlavento, a short distance from one another.
Their distribution is no accident. It's in this strip — from Quarteira to Lagoa — that most of the tourist offer and the rental of holiday homes is concentrated, so the parks were built where family demand is highest. In the Sotavento (Tavira, Olhão, Faro, Monte Gordo) there's no large-scale water park, which weighs on the choice of area for those travelling with children focused on slides.

To slot the parks into the rest of the programme, it's worth cross-referencing this guide with our Algarve with children itinerary, where the parks feature as a whole day of the trip.
Where is each water park and how far away?
All three parks sit less than 45 minutes' drive from Faro Airport. Aquashow is the most central and the closest to the airport; Aqualand is halfway between the Centre and the Barlavento; and Slide & Splash mainly serves those staying on the Lagoa, Carvoeiro and Portimão side. The table below sums up the location and the approximate travel times.
| Park | Town / municipality | Distance from Faro (airport) | Most practical base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aquashow | Quarteira (Loulé) | ~13 km · 15–20 min | Quarteira, Vilamoura, Almancil |
| Aqualand | Alcantarilha (Silves) | ~40 km · 35–40 min | Armação de Pêra, Albufeira |
| Slide & Splash | Estômbar / Lagoa | ~50 km · 40–45 min | Lagoa, Carvoeiro, Portimão |
The figures are indicative and depend on peak-season traffic. Aquashow sits beside the EN125, in Quarteira, a few minutes from Vilamoura. Aqualand is based in Alcantarilha, closer to Armação de Pêra and Albufeira. Slide & Splash is anchored in the Lagoa area, with Carvoeiro and Portimão a short distance away.
What sets Aquashow, Slide & Splash and Aqualand apart?
Each park has its own character. Aquashow is the only one that combines a water park and a themed amusement park under the same ticket, with a roller coaster and shows alongside the slides. Slide & Splash is one of the oldest in Europe and bets on extreme slides and bird and reptile shows. Aqualand is the most classic, with a strong children's area and slides for all ages.
Aquashow (Quarteira)
Aquashow is the logical choice for those staying in the Golden Triangle or in Quarteira. It joins the water side to an amusement area with a roller coaster, which lets you fill a whole day with children of different ages — some on the slides, others on the carousels. It also has a wave pool and a lazy river for the little ones and grassy areas to rest.

Slide & Splash (Lagoa)
Slide & Splash, in Estômbar (municipality of Lagoa), is among the best known in the Barlavento and serves well those renting a home in Carvoeiro or on Praia da Rocha. It bets on near-vertical drop slides for the bravest, alongside calmer areas and animal shows. It's a big park, with plenty of natural shade, which helps on the hottest days.
Aqualand (Alcantarilha, Silves)
Aqualand is based in Alcantarilha and is the nearest water spot for those staying in Armação de Pêra or Albufeira. It has a strong children's component, with gentle slides and shallow pools, without leaving out the faster descents for teenagers and adults. It's often the option for those after a more traditional park centred on families with young children.
| Park | Strong point | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Aquashow | Water + amusement + shows | Families with mixed ages |
| Slide & Splash | Extreme slides and animal shows | Adventurous teenagers and adults |
| Aqualand | Wide children's area | Families with young children |
In practice, the choice of park ends up following the choice of the area where you rent a home: you go with the park that's nearest. So it's better to decide on the town first and only then the park, not the other way round.
When do the Algarve's water parks open?
The Algarve's water parks operate almost only in the bathing season, typically from late May or June to mid-September, with extended hours in July and August. Outside that period they're usually closed, because they depend on high temperatures and on water warmed by the sun. Anyone travelling at Easter, in autumn or in winter will struggle to find a park open.
The dates change from year to year and from park to park, so each one's official calendar is the only reliable source. The best time to go is the height of summer, when the heat justifies a whole day in the water. If you're putting the programme together, see our guide on when to book a holiday in the Algarve to align the trip with the season when the parks are running.
As the parks only open in summer, it's worth booking the holiday home well ahead: the towns near the parks sell out early precisely in the months when they're open.
Where to stay near the Algarve's water parks?
The most practical area for a plan centred on water parks is Quarteira–Vilamoura: Aquashow is on the doorstep and Aqualand about half an hour away. In the Barlavento, staying in Lagoa, Carvoeiro or Portimão puts Slide & Splash 10–20 minutes away. In either case, a home with a kitchen and parking makes the logistics of a park day far easier.
Quarteira is a seaside town of around 24,000 inhabitants, with an urban beach, a marina nearby and a long stretch of sand, and it has a good supply of apartments at gentler prices than those of neighbouring Vilamoura. It's the ideal base for those wanting Aquashow round the corner without paying luxury rates. For a more family profile, also see the houses with a private pool in the area, which let you cool off at home on the days without a park.

To choose the right town according to the family profile, our guides to the best areas for families and to where to stay in the Algarve are useful, cross-referencing beaches, services and distances. Anyone travelling in a large group should also see the guide to the Algarve for groups, where a shared home near the parks works out clearly cheaper per person.
Which homes to rent near Aquashow in Quarteira?
Quarteira has the best balance between proximity to Aquashow and rental price. In our inventory there are several 2-bedroom apartments a few minutes from the park and the beach, ideal for a family of four, plus larger apartments in Portimão for those who prefer the Barlavento and Slide & Splash. Booking direct on Homing, our official partner, comes out cheaper than on Booking, Airbnb or Hotels.com — with no platform commission or hidden fees, with support in Portuguese.
For a base by Aquashow, the 2-bedroom apartment in Quarteira · 76 m² and the 2-bedroom apartment with pool in Quarteira · 77 m² give room for two adults and two children, with a kitchen to prepare meals and cut the costs of the park day. Those who prefer the Portimão and Slide & Splash side find more space in the 4-bedroom apartment in Portimão · 70 m², with four bedrooms for a larger group.

Rental prices vary with the dates — check each home's page for the figure for your nights. In any case, splitting a home with a kitchen between four or more people usually pays off against a hotel, especially in the weeks when the park is open and demand is at its peak.
How much does a day at an Algarve water park cost?
A day at an Algarve water park always involves an entry ticket, parking, a locker and meals. The ticket is the biggest item and varies with the park, the age (child, adult, senior) and whether you buy online or at the ticket office. Very young children usually get in free up to a certain height, and there are often afternoon tickets at a reduced price.
Rather than risk quoting figures that change every year, the practical rule is simple: budget the ticket for each family member, add the parking and the locker rental, and set aside a margin for food and drink at the park. Bringing your own picnic to the picnic area, where allowed, is the easiest way to cut the bill. To fit this spend into the overall trip, see our family holiday budget.
- Ticket — the biggest cost; cheaper bought online and on an afternoon ticket.
- Parking — paid separately at most parks.
- Locker — daily rental to store valuables and clothes.
- Meals — restaurants and kiosks inside the park, or your own picnic in the picnic area.
Adding it all up, a park day is one of the priciest outings of an Algarve holiday, but also one of the most rewarding with children. Staying in a home with a kitchen helps balance things out: you save on eating out to free up budget for the ticket.
What to bring and how to make the most of the day?
The essentials for a day at a water park are sun cream, flip-flops, a hat, water and cash or card for the locker and meals. Most parks let you bring towels and some picnic food to the picnic area, but no glass or professional diving gear. Arriving at opening time, early in the morning, is the best way to avoid the queues for the most popular slides in July and August.
- Buy the ticket online the day before and carry it on your phone.
- Arrive at opening time to catch the slides empty.
- Apply water-resistant sun cream first thing in the morning and reapply midday.
- Set aside a grassy or shady spot as the family meeting point.
- Eat earlier or later to dodge the restaurant peaks.
With this simple plan, a single day pays off like two: the children tire themselves out in a healthy way, the adults rest between descents and nobody gets sunburnt halfway through the afternoon. On the way back, a home with a private pool even allows one last calm dip before dinner.
Is it worth combining water parks with other attractions?
Yes. The water parks combine well with other family attractions that sit in the same strip of the Algarve, which avoids long journeys between days. The Zoomarine, in Guia (Albufeira), is the region's marine theme park and sits near Aqualand, the natural complement for those staying in the Centre. For the rest of the programme, there are beaches, boat trips and caves a short distance away.
Anyone renting a home in Quarteira or Vilamoura has, within a short radius, Aquashow, Zoomarine and some of the most beautiful beaches in the Central Algarve. On the Barlavento side, Slide & Splash pairs with Praia da Marinha and with the boat trips out to the Benagil caves. Mixing park days with beach and boat days balances the pace and the budget of the holiday.
In the end, the best strategy is to alternate: a water-park day, a calm-beach day, an outing day. That way, the trip doesn't come down to queues and tickets, and the children take away varied memories of a thoroughly full holiday.
