Carvoeiro is a fishing village in the municipality of Lagoa, around 44 km from Faro Airport, built around a small beach wedged between golden cliffs. With just over 2,700 inhabitants, in summer it turns into one of the most popular holiday hubs on the central Algarve coast, especially for those after pretty beaches, clifftop walks and easy access to the Benagil cave.
This guide explains what to see in the village itself, how to reach the best beaches on the Lagoa coast, when to go and where to stay — with real homes to rent a few minutes from the sea.
Why does Carvoeiro charm so many people?
Carvoeiro charms because it gathers, within a radius of a few kilometres, almost everything that defines the postcard Algarve: honey-coloured cliffs, small beaches with calm waters, viewpoints over the Atlantic and the Benagil cave right next door. It's a former fishing village in the municipality of Lagoa that grew in a restrained way around its cove, without the high-rises of other seaside resorts.
With around 2,721 permanent residents, the village is compact and walkable: from the square by the beach you can walk to restaurants, bars and the viewpoints of Algar Seco. This human scale is the reason so many couples and families choose it over larger destinations. A few minutes' drive away there's also Ferragudo, one of the prettiest villages in the municipality of Lagoa, and the town of Portimão with every service.
Carvoeiro sits on the central Algarve coast, halfway between the rugged Barlavento of Lagos and Sagres and the calmer Sotavento of Tavira. That central position makes it a good base for exploring much of the region without changing home mid-holiday, which weighs heavily in the decision of where to stay.
What are Carvoeiro beach and the village centre like?
Carvoeiro beach sits in the very heart of the village: it's a strip of golden sand wedged between cliffs, with a sea that's usually calm and sheltered. The big advantage is the access — you walk down to the sand from the central square, with no long treks or distant car parks, which makes it practical for a day at the beach with children.
The square by the beach is the centre of everything. Around it cluster terraces, fish restaurants, ice-cream parlours and the departure point of the boats to the caves. At night, the atmosphere is relaxed: dinners with a sea view and laid-back bars, without the party scene of Albufeira. Those after peace and quiet on their doorstep will find it here.

Being small, Carvoeiro beach fills up quickly in July and August. It's worth arriving early in the morning or using it in the late afternoon, and saving the hottest days for larger beaches with a wider stretch of sand, like Praia da Marinha or Praia da Galé, a short drive away. The village works, in essence, as a base — and not as the only beach of the holiday.
Is it worth seeing Algar Seco and the viewpoints?
Yes — Algar Seco is the unmissable attraction of Carvoeiro and lies a few minutes from the beach. It's an area of rock formations sculpted by the sea, with arches, caves and natural pools, reached by a stairway and a wooden boardwalk that runs from the village centre along the cliff. It's the most photographed spot in the area, especially at sunrise and sunset.
Within Algar Seco you'll find "A Boneca", a cavity in the rock with two natural windows open to the Atlantic — one of the most sought-after corners for photographs. The boardwalk linking Carvoeiro to Algar Seco then carries on eastward, offering views from above over the sea and the cliffs, and also serves as a pedestrian link to viewpoints and neighbouring beaches.

| Place | Distance from Carvoeiro | What to see |
|---|---|---|
| Algar Seco | 5–10 min on foot | Arches, caves and natural pools in the cliff |
| Nossa Senhora da Encarnação viewpoint | 5 min on foot | Chapel and view from above over the village beach |
| Praia de Vale Centeanes | 5 min by car | Sheltered sand and start of the Seven Valleys trail |
| Praia da Marinha | 15 min by car | One of the most beautiful beaches in Europe |
| Benagil | 10 min by car | Beach and cave reached by water |
These spots are all on the same cliff coast, which lets you combine viewpoints, swims and walks in a single day. Set aside at least one morning just for Algar Seco and the viewpoints — it's the best way to understand why this stretch of coastline is so celebrated.
How do you visit Benagil and the Lagoa coast from Carvoeiro?
The Benagil cave is on the same Lagoa coast, around 10 minutes by car from Carvoeiro, and can only be visited by water. The three ways to get there are kayak, stand-up paddle or boat, with departures from Benagil beach itself or the Carvoeiro square. Stepping onto the sand inside the cave is no longer allowed on boat visits, and entry by land is closed off for safety reasons.
The choice depends on your profile. Kayak and paddle give you the freedom to enter the dome and stop for photographs, but they require a calm sea and some physical effort; the boat is more comfortable and suited to families with small children or to those who don't want to paddle. Either way, the sea needs to be calm, so it's advisable to book the trip for the start of your stay and keep alternative days in hand. The details are in our guide on how to visit the Benagil cave and on the Benagil beach page.

The same coast hides dozens of other caves and tiny beaches reachable only by sea, which is why the boat trips leaving from Carvoeiro often combine Benagil with several sea caves. If you love being on the water, it's worth devoting a whole day to this stretch between Carvoeiro and Praia da Marinha — one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, with its own guide in how to get to Praia da Marinha.
What is the Seven Hanging Valleys trail like?
The Seven Hanging Valleys trail is a walking route of around 5.7 km (one way) that follows the cliff line between Praia de Vale Centeanes, near Carvoeiro, and Praia da Marinha. It crosses seven small valleys set into the cliff — hence the name — and is considered one of the finest coastal trails in Europe, with continuous views over the Atlantic, rock arches and the Benagil sea cave seen from above.
The route takes two to three hours on foot, one way, with uneven ground and gentle climbs and descents; it has no shade, so closed shoes, water and a hat are recommended, along with avoiding the hottest hours. You can start at Vale Centeanes, 5 minutes by car from Carvoeiro, and finish at Praia da Marinha, returning along the same path or with two cars.
- Start: Praia de Vale Centeanes (a few minutes from Carvoeiro)
- End: Praia da Marinha
- Distance: around 5.7 km one way
- Difficulty: moderate — uneven ground, no shade
- Best time: early morning or late afternoon, in spring or autumn
This trail is the reason Carvoeiro is so popular with those who like to walk. It pairs beach and nature in a single destination and links to other routes in the region — our guide to trails and walks in the Algarve shows how to string together several days on foot without repeating the scenery.
When is the best time to go to Carvoeiro?
The best time for Carvoeiro is between May and October, with June and September offering the best balance: warm sea, long days and fewer people than at the peak of July and August. In high summer the village beach fills quickly and accommodation prices rise; outside that window, you'll find the village calmer and rates considerably lower.
Spring and early autumn are ideal for combining beach with walking, since the Seven Valleys trail and the Benagil coast are better enjoyed without the August heat. Winter is mild but quieter, with part of the dining scene closed — it can be perfect for a rest, as we explain in the Algarve off-season guide.
| Season | Atmosphere | Sea and weather | Accommodation prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| June and September | Balanced, pleasant | Warm sea, long days | Medium-high |
| July and August | Full, lively | Warm sea, lots of sun | Highest of the year |
| May and October | Quiet | Mild, sea still cool | Medium |
| November to April | Very calm | Mild, some rainy days | Lowest |
To choose dates according to budget and weather, it's worth cross-referencing this table with our month-by-month calendar. The rule of thumb is simple: the closer to August, the more you pay and the more people you'll find; the further towards the edges of the season, the more village you'll have to yourself.
Is Carvoeiro better for couples or for families?
Carvoeiro serves both well, but it shines above all for couples and families seeking quiet. For couples, it's one of the most romantic villages in the central Algarve: a small beach, dinners with a view, sunset at Algar Seco and the absence of the noisy nightlife of other resorts. For families, it offers a sandy beach in the centre, a calm sea and easy access on foot.
Those travelling with children find a good compromise here: a safe beach, restaurants nearby and gentle boat trips to Benagil. Those after clubs and partying until dawn will prefer Albufeira. To dig deeper into the best areas for travelling with kids, see the Algarve with children guide; for getaways for two, the Algarve for couples guide.
- Couples: romantic atmosphere, dinners with a view, viewpoints and few late-night excesses
- Families: sandy beach in the centre, calm sea and gentle boat trips
- Walkers: the Seven Valleys trail and cliff coast on the doorstep
- Party-seekers: better to choose Albufeira or Praia da Rocha
In short, Carvoeiro is the choice for those who want the Algarve beautiful and restful, with beach and nature at hand, and are willing to take the car for a livelier night out. Once the profile is set, all that's left is to decide which part of the village to stay in.
Where to stay in Carvoeiro and how much does it cost to rent?
The best place to stay in Carvoeiro is near the village centre, to have the beach, the restaurants and Algar Seco a few minutes' walk away. The residential areas on the surrounding slopes offer roomier, quieter homes, many with a pool and sea view, ideal for those travelling by car and after more privacy. As it's a small, much sought-after village, the inventory in Carvoeiro itself is limited, so it's wise to book early.
In our inventory, a good central option is the 2-bedroom apartment in Carvoeiro, of around 90 m² — practical for a couple or small family who want everything within reach. For those who prefer a more intimate format, the 1-bedroom villa in Carvoeiro, of around 59 m², works well for two. If you're after more space or nearby alternatives, it's worth looking at Lagoa and Armação de Pêra, a few minutes away by car, such as the 3-bedroom apartment in Lagoa of 130 m² or the 3-bedroom villa in Armação de Pêra, the latter around 37 km from Faro Airport.

What type of home should you choose in Carvoeiro?
In Carvoeiro you'll mainly find apartments and townhouses near the centre and villas with a pool on the slopes. For couples, a well-located apartment is usually enough; for families or groups, a villa with a private pool repays the extra comfort and the days spent at home. Our guide to villas with a private pool in the Algarve helps you decide.
Whatever the home, book it direct on Homing, our official partner. By booking direct, you avoid the platform commission and the hidden fees of Booking, Airbnb or Hotels.com, with support in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish. How do you get to Carvoeiro and get around the area?
You reach Carvoeiro from Faro Airport in around 40 to 50 minutes by car, covering the roughly 44 km along the A22 motorway with an exit for Lagoa. It's the natural starting point for those flying into the Algarve, and the car is clearly the most practical way to explore the area, given the distances between beaches and the poor public transport links to the cliffs.
Within the village, almost everything is done on foot: the beach, the restaurants and Algar Seco are a short distance from the centre. For the neighbouring beaches — Marinha, Benagil, Galé — and for the start of the Seven Valleys trail, the car saves a lot of time, though parking near the village beach is scarce in summer. There are local buses connecting to Lagoa and Portimão, but with limited timetables.
If you're still working out the transport and the route around the region, the guide how to get to and around the Algarve details the options between airport, hire car and train. With Carvoeiro as a central base, it's easy to set up a seven-day itinerary without changing home, alternating beaches, caves and walks from the same point.
