What is the difference between Barlavento and Sotavento?
The difference is geographical and real. The Barlavento is the western half of the Algarve (from Sagres to Albufeira), facing the Atlantic: the landscape of golden cliffs dominates, with hidden coves and a cooler, choppier sea. The Sotavento is the eastern half (from Faro to Vila Real de Santo António): wide, flat sands, warmer and calmer water, and the lagoon system of the Ria Formosa. Faro marks roughly the border.

Barlavento: cliffs, surf and coves
From Faro westwards — Lagos, Portimão, Aljezur, Sagres. This is the side of the Algarve’s most spectacular cliff beaches: Praia de Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo and the iconic Praia da Marinha. The Costa Vicentina, around Sagres and Aljezur, is the surfing mecca of Portugal.
The water is cooler (21–23 °C at the height of summer) and the ocean more open, with consistent swell. It is the destination for those after dramatic scenery, surf and towns with character, while keeping good access.

Sotavento: warm sea, sands and the Ria Formosa
From Faro eastwards — Olhão, Tavira, Monte Gordo. The sands are long and flat, and the water is the warmest in mainland Portugal: 22 to 25 °C in summer, against the 21–23 °C of the Barlavento. The difference comes down to a coast sheltered from northerly winds and the shallow lagoons of the Ria Formosa, which warm up easily.
The barrier islands (Tavira, Armona, Culatra) have beaches with a warm, calm sea, ideal for children. The atmosphere is more authentic and less crowded — and prices, as a rule, are lower.
Food and atmosphere: two Algarves at the table
The two sides also taste different. In the Barlavento, Lagos and Portimão live for fresh fish and seafood, seaside bars and a young energy; Sagres adds the laid-back surfer side of the Costa Vicentina. In the Sotavento, Olhão and Tavira offer the most authentic Algarve: fish markets, oysters and clams from the Ria Formosa, Moorish streets and an unhurried pace. One side is more cosmopolitan and active; the other more genuine and slow — and both less than an hour’s drive from each other.
Which side should you choose?
Choose the Barlavento if you want cliffs, surf, photography and more youthful buzz. Choose the Sotavento if you are after a warm, calm sea, wide sands, quiet and good value — above all as a family. If you don’t want to compromise on anything, the Centro (Albufeira, Carvoeiro) sits between the two and offers the best of both. See where to stay in detail in our guide by area.
