Where the fireworks are in the Algarve at New Year
The biggest show is usually in Albufeira, with fireworks launched over the marina and visible from the Praia dos Pescadores and the Old Town, where the largest crowd gathers. The Portimão seafront and Praia da Rocha also stage fireworks over the river Arade and the sands, in a family-friendly mood. In Vilamoura, the fireworks paint the sky over the marina, in a more sophisticated setting. Lagos and Tavira hold more contained celebrations, in the centre and by the marina/lagoon.
The exact spots, times and any concerts change every year and are confirmed by the town councils close to the date. Always check the council's official programme before planning your night, especially if you're travelling with children and want to choose the best spot to watch the fireworks.

New Year's Eve is, along with summer and Easter, one of the busiest times in the Algarve. The best homes in the liveliest towns sell out months ahead, so the ideal is to book 2 to 4 months in advance. At this time, a minimum stay of 3 to 5 nights is common, rather than a single night.

What the weather is like in the Algarve at year-end and what to pack
In late December and early January the Algarve has a mild and bright winter by European standards: highs typically between 15 and 17 °C and lows of 8 to 10 °C, with plenty of sunny days broken by some rain.
