The most beautiful beaches in the Algarve cluster along three distinct fronts: the ochre cliffs of the Barlavento (Marinha, Camilo, Dona Ana), the hidden coves of the Centre (Benagil, Carvalho, Falésia) and the wide warm-sea beaches of the Sotavento (Tavira Island, Monte Gordo). Along a coast of around 155 km, there's a beach for every taste — and the right choice changes depending on whether you're after caves, family sands or surf waves.

In this guide we gather 18 beaches by area, with what makes each one special, the distance to Faro Airport and where to stay near each stretch of sand.

What are the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve?

Praia da Marinha, in Lagoa, is the most often cited as the most beautiful beach in the Algarve, with its golden cliffs and rock arches drawing the famous image of the two "M"s over the water. But reducing the Algarve to a single beach is unfair: what sets this coast apart is its variety. In a few kilometres you go from narrow coves wedged into cliffs to immense warm-sea sands, where a child walks dozens of metres before the water reaches their waist.

To choose well, it pays to think by area. The Barlavento (from Lagos to Sagres) is the realm of cliffs and the coolest, clearest waters. The Centre, between Carvoeiro and Albufeira, mixes postcard coves with beaches of easy-access sand. The Sotavento, from Faro to Vila Real de Santo António, is made of the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa and the warmest sea on the Portuguese coast.

The list that follows covers 18 beaches organised by area, with what makes each one special and the approximate distance to Faro Airport — the arrival point for most visitors. At the end, we show where to stay near the best ones, because sleeping a few minutes from the sand changes the whole holiday experience.

Which are the best beaches in the Barlavento (Lagos, Sagres and the Costa Vicentina)?

The most spectacular beaches of the Barlavento are in Lagos, where the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade drop sheer over emerald-green water. This is home to some of the most photographed scenery in Portugal — and, further west, the Costa Vicentina holds wild beaches battered by the Atlantic, a surfers' paradise. Lagos is about 63 km from Faro Airport, so it's worth factoring in the travel time.

Praia da Marinha (Lagoa)

Wedged between Carvoeiro and Benagil, Praia da Marinha is the country's most iconic beach for the rock formations rising from the sea. You go down a long staircase; those who walk the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail reach the viewpoint with the poster-perfect view. Go early: the sand is small and fills up fast in summer.

Praia do Camilo (Lagos)

Praia do Camilo is reached by a wooden staircase of more than 200 steps that has become famous in its own right. Below, two small coves linked by a tunnel carved into the rock. Clear, fresh water, ideal for snorkelling beside the cliffs.

Praia de Dona Ana (Lagos)

With a Blue Flag and sands widened in recent years, Praia de Dona Ana combines the drama of the cliffs with more space and beach facilities. It's one of the few large cliff beaches in Lagos with relatively easy access and parking nearby.

Meia Praia, Luz, Arrifana and Amado

Meia Praia is the longest stretch of sand in Lagos — perfect for long walks and sports. Praia da Luz, in the village of Luz, is family-friendly and sheltered. Over on the Costa Vicentina, Arrifana and Praia do Amado are surf destinations par excellence, with consistent waves and a laid-back vibe.

Together, the Barlavento offers the perfect contrast: intimate, photogenic coves near Lagos and broad, windy beaches to the west. It's the right area for those who value dramatic scenery and don't mind colder water.

What about the Centre beaches (Lagoa, Carvoeiro, Albufeira and Loulé)?

The Centre of the Algarve concentrates the most hidden coves and some of the most accessible beaches on the coast, between Carvoeiro and Albufeira. It's the zone of the so-called Golden Triangle, with the highest density of accommodation and beach facilities — and, for that reason, the most practical base for exploring by car. Albufeira is just 26 km from Faro Airport.

Praia do Carvalho and Algar Seco (Carvoeiro)

Praia do Carvalho, near Carvoeiro, is a tiny cove reached through a tunnel carved into the rock — one of the most intimate corners of the coast. Right beside it, Algar Seco offers natural pools and rock formations that make the walk along the Carvoeiro boardwalk worthwhile.

Praia da Falésia (Albufeira)

Praia da Falésia stretches for around 6 km of sand at the foot of a cliff of red and ochre tones, fringed by pines. With a Blue Flag, it's one of the most spectacular for a walk at the end of the day. Its closeness to Vilamoura and Olhos de Água makes it much sought after.

Praia da Galé and Praia dos Três Irmãos

Praia da Galé, west of Albufeira, is wide golden sand, great for families. Praia dos Três Irmãos, in Alvor, is marked by the huge arched rocks that give it both its name and its photogenic quality.

Praia de Quarteira and Vale do Lobo

Praia de Quarteira offers an urban, flat stretch of sand with a long seafront promenade. A few kilometres away, Praia de Vale do Lobo and Praia do Ancão mark the start of the finer-sand coast next to the Ria Formosa, in a more exclusive register.

The Centre is, at heart, the zone of balance: it has cliff postcards in Carvoeiro, immense sands at Falésia and Galé and all the logistics within reach. It's the safest choice for first-time visitors who want to see a lot without long drives.

What makes the Sotavento beaches special?

The Sotavento of the Algarve has the warmest sea on the Portuguese coast — in August, the water hovers around 21–22 °C, several degrees above the Barlavento — and the widest sands, formed by the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa. There are no cliffs here: there are dunes, salt marsh and kilometres of fine sand. It's the ideal area for those who want long swims and less crowded beaches. Tavira is 31 km from Faro.

Praia da Ilha de Tavira

Praia da Ilha de Tavira is reached by boat from Tavira or Santa Luzia, on a short crossing over the Ria Formosa. The reward is a vast stretch of warm, transparent water, with beach facilities but without the squeeze of the cliff beaches. It's part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park.

Unlike the cliffs and arches of the Barlavento, the Sotavento swaps rock for the dunes and wide sands of the barrier islands.

Praia de Monte Gordo and Cabanas

Praia de Monte Gordo, with a Blue Flag, is a huge, flat stretch of calm sea, among the warmest in the country — perfect for families with young children. A few kilometres away, the beach of Cabanas de Tavira is another barrier island of calm water, reached by boat from the riverside promenade.

Those who choose the Sotavento swap the drama of the cliffs for the comfort of the warm sea and the authenticity of the fishing villages. To get to grips with this area in depth, our guide to the Sotavento of the Algarve, from Tavira to Olhão, is worth a read.

Benagil: how do you visit the Algarve's most famous cave?

The Benagil Cave can only be visited by sea — by kayak, stand-up paddle or boat — because since 2024 it has been banned to swim from the beach to the cave, on safety grounds. The famous opening in the roof, which lets a pillar of light onto the sand inside, lies a few hundred metres from the beach of Benagil, in the municipality of Lagoa.

Benagil beach, the starting point for the most photographed cave in the Algarve — visitable only by sea.

There are three ways to get there, each with its own rhythm:

  • Kayak or SUP: rentals leave from Benagil beach itself and let you enter the cave (when the sea and tide allow). It's the most intimate way and the best value-to-experience option.
  • Boat trip: departures from Benagil, Carvoeiro, Armação de Pêra, Portimão or Albufeira. Many boats don't enter the cave, only pass by the entrance — check before booking.
  • On foot along the upper trail: it doesn't reach the cave, but the viewpoint over the opening in the roof, on the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, is free and spectacular.

To plan the visit at leisure, pair Benagil with the neighbouring beaches of Marinha and Carvalho in a single day. Our guide to Benagil and the caves gathers the trip options, timetables and tide precautions to bear in mind.

Which beaches to choose for families, photography or surf?

The best beach in the Algarve depends on what you're after: families with young children do better in the warm-sea, flat-sand Sotavento; those chasing photographs want the cliffs and golden light of the Barlavento; and surfers turn to the open Atlantic of the Costa Vicentina. This table sums up the right beach for each goal.

Praia da Rocha, in Portimão, deserves a separate mention: it's one of the largest and busiest in the Algarve, with huge rocks and all the infrastructure on hand, ideal for those who want a lively urban beach. If you're travelling with children, our Algarve with children guide goes deeper into the safest areas and beaches.

In the end, most visitors end up mixing registers across the week — a cliff morning, an afternoon of wide sand, a day by boat in Benagil. It's that diversity, half an hour's drive apart, that makes the Algarve so hard to match.

Where to stay near the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve?

To be a few minutes from the best beaches, the most practical bases are Lagos (for Camilo, Dona Ana and Ponta da Piedade), Carvoeiro (for Marinha, Carvalho and Benagil) and Albufeira (for Falésia, Galé and the centre of the Algarve). Staying close avoids the parking nightmare of the most famous beaches in July and August, when the car parks fill up early in the morning.

Among our homes, the 3-bedroom apartment with pool in Lagos · 150 m² puts you a short distance from the cliffs of Lagos, while the 1-bedroom villa in Carvoeiro · 59 m² is the ideal base for a couple to explore Marinha and Benagil without the crowds. For groups who want the Centre within reach, the 4-bedroom villa with private pool in Armação de Pêra · 186 m² is near the beaches of Galé and Benagil, with a pool of your own for the end of the day.

The golden rule is simple: first choose the right area for the beaches you most want to see, and only then the type of home. A good location saves hours of travel and dozens of euros in parking over the week — and leaves you more beach time.

What tips help you make the most of the Algarve beaches?

The most valuable tip is to arrive early at the cliff beaches: Marinha, Camilo and Dona Ana have small sands and limited parking, and from 10.30 am in summer it's already hard to find a spot. Those who arrive at 9 am catch better light, a calmer sea and sand to pick from.

  1. Check the tide: on cliff beaches like Camilo or Marinha, high tide shrinks the sand a lot. Look up the tide tables before you go.
  2. Bring water and shade: many small coves have no bar or umbrella rental; your own umbrella makes a difference.
  3. Footwear for the staircases: Camilo, Marinha and Carvalho mean steps; firm flip-flops or sandals prevent falls.
  4. Respect the signs: areas with rockfall risk on the cliffs are marked — don't sit beneath the bluffs.
  5. Look for the Blue Flag: it guarantees certified water quality, a lifeguard and beach facilities.

Beyond the sand, the Algarve offers much more than beaches. To alternate sea days with culture and nature, see what to do in the Algarve beyond the beach and, to organise it all into a week, follow our 7-day itinerary. With a little planning, you can see the poster beaches without the stress of the crowds.
