It is the comparison people make most when planning an Algarve holiday with children, and almost always in the wrong order: you pick the park first, then discover it is an hour's drive from the house you rented.
Aquashow is in Semino, just outside Quarteira, in the centre of the Algarve. Slide & Splash is in Estômbar, in the municipality of Lagoa, in the Barlavento. They are about 50 km apart — and in summer, considerably more than an hour once you add the EN125 traffic and the queue for the car park. This guide compares them on what actually decides the choice, and says what it costs to stay near each one, with the figures from the homes we have.
Which to choose: the short answer
If you are staying between Vilamoura, Quarteira, Almancil or Albufeira, Aquashow is the obvious choice — it is on your doorstep. If you are in Portimão, Praia da Rocha, Carvoeiro, Lagoa or Armação de Pêra, it is Slide & Splash.
This is not dodging the question. It is that the quality gap between the two is small and the distance gap is enormous. Crossing the Algarve with tired children, in August, to reach a marginally different park is the wrong trade — and it is the mistake you see most.
There is one real exception: anyone staying more than a week who wants to repeat the experience can do one of each. In that case the order matters — keep the further one for a day in the middle of the stay, not the first day and not the day before you fly home.
Where each one is, and why that decides everything
The two parks sit in different halves of the region. The table shows the straight-line distance from each town where we have homes, and how many homes are in each.
| Town | To Aquashow | To Slide & Splash | Our homes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarteira | 1.6 km | ~50 km | 19 |
| Vilamoura | 2.5 km | ~50 km | 61 |
| Albufeira | 12 km | ~25 km | 60 |
| Armação de Pêra | 22 km | 10 km | 25 |
| Praia da Rocha | ~30 km | 8.6 km | 10 |
| Lagoa and Carvoeiro | ~30 km | 0.8 to 5 km | 3 |
Read another way: we have 80 homes within 2.5 km of Aquashow and about 43 within 10 km of Slide & Splash. Albufeira is the only genuinely halfway point — 12 km from one, 25 km from the other — which is why so many families end up staying there.
If the park matters to you, choose it before booking the house, not after. It is far easier to pick accommodation near the park than the other way round. The guide to the best areas for families helps weigh beach, services and distances together.
Aquashow: which families it suits
Aquashow is in Semino, on the edge of Quarteira, minutes from the Vilamoura marina. It is the central Algarve's park, and two things set it apart: it has a hotel inside the grounds and it has a covered area, which lets it operate outside the peak of summer.
That changes the planning. Anyone coming in May, June or September — months when an afternoon can turn cold without warning — has a safety net here that the other park does not offer. And anyone who would rather not face a drive at the end of a full day of water and sun with small children has the option of sleeping on site.
Against that, it sits in the densest tourist area of the Algarve. In August, the combination of Vilamoura, Quarteira and Albufeira all emptying into the same place is felt — in the queues and in the car park. Arriving at opening time is not textbook advice here: it is the difference between a good day and a day of waiting.
Slide & Splash: which families it suits
Slide & Splash is in Estômbar, in the municipality of Lagoa, and is one of the oldest water parks in the Algarve — open since the eighties. It serves the whole Barlavento: Portimão, Praia da Rocha, Alvor, Carvoeiro, Ferragudo and Armação de Pêra are all under half an hour away.
Scale is its main characteristic. It is a large site, with enough variety of slides to separate the teenagers from the little ones without anyone standing around watching the clock — which is, in practice, what decides whether the day works for a family with widely spread ages.

The flip side is not having its rival's covered section. Outside the warm months, a windy or cloudy day ruins the visit outright, and the ticket is not refunded. In May and October it really is worth checking the forecast the night before.
What a day at a water park costs
Here I have to be straight with you: I am not going to give you ticket prices. They change every year, vary between high and low season, between online and gate, and between adult, child and senior. Any number I wrote would be wrong within a season — and an article with out-of-date prices is worse than one with no prices.
What I can tell you reliably is the rest of the bill, which almost nobody adds up. A day at a water park for a family of four costs, on top of the tickets: parking, lunch inside the grounds (where you usually cannot bring your own food), a locker for phones and wallets, and sun cream that goes three times faster than usual. It is normally the most expensive day of the holiday, and it belongs in your family holiday budget.
Two savings that always work: buy tickets online in advance, which is almost always cheaper than at the gate, and go in June or September rather than August — shorter queues, less heat and lower accommodation prices. See when to book an Algarve holiday to catch both.
Which ages get the most out of each park
This is the question that actually matters and that the usual comparisons ignore. A water park is good or bad depending on the age of whoever is going:
- Up to 4 — the toddler area is all they will use. Both have one; check the park map for where it is and set up camp beside it
- 5 to 9 — the golden age. They need mid-sized slides, and here variety counts for more than adrenaline
- 10 to 14 — they want the big ones. Check the minimum heights before you go, because a child who cannot ride the slides they came to see has a ruined day
- Teenagers — they need autonomy more than attractions. Agree a meeting point and times, and let them roam
- Adults without children — honestly, neither. A boat trip or the quieter beaches give far more back
The commonest failure is taking a family with widely spread ages — a three-year-old and a twelve-year-old — and expecting both to enjoy the same day. They will not. In that case the fix is to split the adults up and agree to meet at lunchtime.

And there is an alternative worth weighing: if the children are small and the house has a pool, the water park stops being compulsory. Two of our destinations have a pool in more than two thirds of the homes, and that settles a lot of afternoons without a single ticket.
Getting there and when to go
Both sit beside main roads and have their own parking. The table sums up access from the usual starting points.
| Coming from | To Aquashow | To Slide & Splash |
|---|---|---|
| Faro Airport | ~20 km, A22 or EN125 | ~55 km, A22 |
| Vilamoura / Quarteira | 2 to 3 km | ~50 km |
| Albufeira | 12 km | ~25 km |
| Portimão / Praia da Rocha | ~30 km | 8 to 10 km |
| Lagos | ~60 km | ~25 km |
About the A22: it is electronic and has no toll booths. Anyone hiring a car should check the vehicle carries a transponder, because paying afterwards means a trip to the post office with the registration and the dates. The EN125 has no tolls but runs through every town, and in August that costs real time. The guide on getting to and around the Algarve covers the connections.
As for the hour: arrive at opening. This is not generic advice — the first ninety minutes are the only window when the big slides do not have a twenty-minute queue. The park empties again after three in the afternoon, but by then nobody has the energy left.
Homes to rent near the parks
These are homes from our inventory beside each of the parks, with live availability and prices. The first is less than a kilometre from Slide & Splash; the other two are minutes from Aquashow.

To widen the search: Quarteira and Vilamoura concentrate the supply beside Aquashow, with medians of €48 and €52; Armação de Pêra is the cheapest base on the Slide & Splash side, with a median of €38; and Albufeira sits halfway between the two.
The verdict: which to choose
If the house is already booked, the decision has been made for you: go to the near one. The difference between the two does not justify crossing the region, and anyone who tells you otherwise has never driven fifty kilometres of EN125 in August with two children in the back.
If you are still choosing where to stay and the water park is a genuine priority, Aquashow has the edge — not because it is the better park, but because it has far more accommodation around it, a hotel on site and a covered area for the shoulder months. Anyone who wants the Barlavento for its cliffs and beaches has in Slide & Splash a park that holds its own, and loses nothing by it.
And if the question is broader than these two, the guide to Algarve water parks covers the rest, and Zoomarine is a different experience — fewer slides, more animals — which usually works better with children up to about seven. For the rest of the programme, see the Algarve with children guide.
