Ferragudo sits in the municipality of Lagoa, on the Central Algarve coast, around 50 km from Faro Airport and separated from Portimão only by the mouth of the River Arade. It's a small parish, with about 1,973 inhabitants, that kept its grid of narrow streets, the cobbles and the boat life when almost the whole coastline was taken over by apartment towers. That's why it remains the right choice for those who want sea and seafood without the noise of a tourist resort.
Where is Ferragudo and why is it different?
Ferragudo sits on the bank opposite Portimão, at the mouth of the River Arade, in the municipality of Lagoa and on the Central Algarve coast. It's around 50 km from Faro Airport (40 to 50 minutes by car along the A22) and a few minutes from Praia da Rocha, which you can see across the river mouth.
What sets the village apart from the rest of the coast is its scale. With around 1,973 inhabitants, Ferragudo was never rebuilt upwards: the white houses, the window frames painted in blue and yellow and the cobbled lanes remain intact around the church square. Anyone arriving by car leaves it in the car parks at the edge and walks through the centre, because much of the streets are too narrow to drive.

This combination — a fishing village minutes from a town with services — explains why Ferragudo almost always appears on lists of the most beautiful beaches and villages in the Algarve. It has the calm of a village and, across the bridge, everything a village lacks: hospital, large supermarkets and the Portimão marina.
What are the best beaches in Ferragudo?
Ferragudo has three main beaches within walking distance of the centre and a fourth to the south, all with distinct characters. Praia Grande is the largest and most family-friendly; Praia da Angrinha sits right below the castle, facing the river; and Praia do Pintadinho is more secluded, with open sea. To the south, Praia dos Caneiros opens up between golden cliffs.
Praia Grande and Praia da Angrinha
Praia Grande is the wide sandy beach on the river side, sheltered and with a gently shelving seabed — which makes it the first choice for those travelling with children. A few steps away, Praia da Angrinha stretches out at the foot of the castle, on a sandbank that fills out at low tide and offers the most photographed view of the village, with Portimão and Praia da Rocha opposite.

Praia do Pintadinho and Praia dos Caneiros
Praia do Pintadinho sits south of the castle, facing the open sea, with a lighthouse on the clifftop and a well-known beach restaurant. Further down, Praia dos Caneiros is the most scenic of the set: a beach between cliffs, with small caves and clear waters that bring it close to the style of Praia da Marinha, already in the Carvoeiro stretch.
| Beach | Profile | Practical notes |
|---|---|---|
| Praia Grande | Wide sand, sheltered sea | Beach facilities, ideal with children |
| Praia da Angrinha | Next to the castle and the river | Best view of the village; sand varies with the tide |
| Praia do Pintadinho | Open sea, more secluded | Lighthouse and beach restaurant |
| Praia dos Caneiros | Cliffs and caves | The most scenic; access south of the village |
As the four are just minutes from one another, it's worth trying more than one on the same day: a morning of calm sea at Praia Grande, late afternoon soaking up the sun at Caneiros. To compare with other options in the area, see our guide to the best beaches in the Algarve.
What to see and do in the village?
The centre of Ferragudo is laid out around the square with the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, from where the lanes drop down to the riverfront. Wandering with no fixed destination is the programme the village calls for: at every corner there's a postcard of a white house, bougainvillea and a moored boat.
- São João do Arade Castle — old fortress above Praia da Angrinha; it's privately owned, seen from outside and from the beach.
- Riverfront — a waterside walk with views of Portimão, terraces and fishing boats.
- Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição — at the high point of the village, with views over the rooftops and the river.
- Boat trips on the Arade — departures to the coastal caves, including the Benagil cave, to the west.

From the Portimão marina, a few minutes away, the boat trips set off that run along the coast to Benagil and Praia da Marinha. It's the simplest way to see up close the caves the tide and the road won't let you reach on foot.
Where to eat seafood and fish in Ferragudo?
Ferragudo is, above all, a fishing village, and the dining reflects it: the strength is fresh seafood and grilled fish, served on the riverfront terraces and in the lanes of the centre. Many visitors from the municipality of Lagoa come to Ferragudo just for lunch, drawn by clams à Bulhão Pato, seafood rice and sardines in the summer season.
The practical rule is simple: fish and seafood by the river and the beach, where the offering is more specialised, and cheaper dishes of the day at the taverns in the heart of the village. In high season it's wise to book a table for dinner, especially at the restaurants with views of the castle. For a broader picture of the region, see the guide on where to eat fresh seafood in the Algarve.
This culture of just-landed fish is what links Ferragudo to the rest of the Central coast: you eat well in the village and in neighbouring Carvoeiro and Portimão, always with the sea on the doorstep.
What's the best time to visit Ferragudo?
The best time to visit Ferragudo is between May and mid-October, when the sea is milder and the terraces are in full swing. July and August bring the warmest sea and the village at its peak, but also the highest rental prices and more people on the beaches and in the restaurants.
Those who prefer calm should choose June or September: the weather is still beach weather, the water is still good in September and the village can breathe. Out of season, between November and March, Ferragudo stays quiet, with a mild climate and frequent sunny days — good for walking and eating seafood without the crowds, even if some of the beach dining closes. To plan your dates, see when to book a holiday in the Algarve.
Whatever the month, booking your accommodation early guarantees more choice and a better price, especially the homes with river views or a few steps from the beaches, which sell out first in high season.
Where to stay: Ferragudo, Carvoeiro or Portimão?
For a holiday in the area, there are three natural bases less than 15 minutes' drive from one another: Ferragudo, for those who want the authentic village and quiet; Carvoeiro, for those after scenic beaches and a wider choice of homes; and Portimão, for those who want a town, services and Praia da Rocha on the doorstep. The choice depends more on the pace of your holiday than on distance.
| Base | Profile | Faro Airport | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ferragudo | Fishing village, quiet | ~50 km | Couples and those escaping crowds |
| Carvoeiro | Cliff beaches, scenic | ~44 km | Beach and photography |
| Portimão | Town with services | ~52 km | Families and long stays |
In Ferragudo the inventory is more limited, being a small village, so many visitors choose to stay in Carvoeiro or Portimão and head to the village for the day. In both cases, apartments are the most sought-after option for couples and small families, while villas with a pool pay off for groups. See also our general guide on where to stay in the Algarve.
This closeness between villages is the great advantage of the Central coast: you settle in one spot and visit everything else without long journeys, from Carvoeiro to Praia da Rocha.
Which homes to rent near Ferragudo?
Because Ferragudo is a small village, most of the area's holiday homes are concentrated in neighbouring Portimão, Lagoa and Carvoeiro, all a few minutes away. In our inventory, apartments with two to four bedrooms are the most useful type for those using the village as a base and wanting to stay near the river and the beaches.
Among the options, there's a 3-bedroom apartment in Portimão of 70 m² that suits groups or larger families near the town and Praia da Rocha; a 2-bedroom apartment in Lagoa of 130 m², more spacious and central in the municipality; and a 2-bedroom apartment in Carvoeiro of 90 m², ideal for couples who want the cliff beaches on the doorstep. There's also a 2-bedroom apartment in Portimão for short stays.
