Praia do Vau is in Portimão, about 3 km west of Praia da Rocha, on a wide beach tucked between cliffs of golden sandstone. It's an urban yet peaceful beach, surrounded by a residential area of houses and apartments, with easy access, parking nearby and beach facilities open in summer. Anyone after Portimão's sun and sea without the buzz of the Rocha finds just the right balance here.
Where is Praia do Vau and why is it different?
Praia do Vau is in the city of Portimão, in the Barlavento of the Algarve, about 3 km west of the central sands of Praia da Rocha. It belongs to the municipality of Portimão, which has close to 60,000 inhabitants and lies some 52 km from Faro Airport — a little over 45 minutes by car along the A22. It's the beach chosen by those who want to stay in Portimão but escape the more intense atmosphere of the Rocha.
What sets it apart is its human scale. Instead of a beachfront of big hotels and cocktail bars, the Vau is framed by a quiet residential area of houses and low-rise buildings, used by residents and holidaymakers renting a home alike. The beach is wide, the sand is golden and fine, and the sandstone cliffs that close off the beach give it shelter from the wind and a photogenic backdrop without needing to walk for miles.
Sitting halfway between Praia da Rocha and Alvor is the Vau's great geographical advantage. Within a short radius you have the buzz of the Rocha to the east and the fishing village of Alvor to the west, with Praia dos Três Irmãos in between. It's a discreet base with everything at hand, without giving up the quiet on your doorstep.
How to get to Praia do Vau?
You reach Praia do Vau by car through the city of Portimão, following the signs west from Praia da Rocha along Avenida do Vau. The way down to the sand is via a ramp, which makes access comfortable for prams, beach bags and people with reduced mobility. From Faro Airport it's around 45–50 minutes along the A22 (Portimão exit).
By public transport, the route is less direct. Portimão's town bus and the regional services serve the city and Praia da Rocha; from the centre or the Rocha, you complete the trip on foot (about 30–40 minutes of pleasant walking along the seafront and the boardwalk beside the cliffs) or by taxi. Portimão's train station connects to the Algarve line, useful for reaching the city without a car.
- By car: A22 to the Portimão exit, then towards Praia da Rocha → Vau (~45 min from Faro Airport).
- On foot from Praia da Rocha: ~3 km along the seafront and boardwalks beside the cliffs, 30–40 min.
- By bus: Portimão's urban network + a short walk or taxi to the sand.
- By train: the Algarve line to Portimão; then bus, taxi or transfer.
If you're moving around the Algarve, it's worth reading our guide on how to get to and around the Algarve, covering the options between car, train and bus. At the Vau, the car remains the most practical option, especially for combining the beach with trips to Alvor, Lagos or inland.
What are the sand, the sea and the cliffs like?
The beach at Praia do Vau is wide, with fine golden sand, facing south and protected by sandstone cliffs that rise in ochre and orange tones. Being sheltered, it tends to catch less wind than more exposed beaches, which helps on days when the northerly makes itself felt elsewhere in the Barlavento. The sea is the open Atlantic, with cooler water than in the Sotavento and swell that varies by the day.

At high tide, the sand narrows beside the cliffs and the sea comes closer to the foot of the bluff. At low tide, far more sand opens up and small coves and nooks appear to the west, towards Praia dos Três Irmãos. It's wise to keep a safe distance from the base of the cliffs, especially after rainy spells, because the sandstone is friable and rocks can fall.
The warning flag and the lifeguard are present during the bathing season, usually from June to September, a period when you're always advised to respect the flag flying before entering the water. Outside those months, the beach stays accessible for a stroll, but without supervision — swimming is at your own risk. This off-season calm is, in fact, one of the charms of the Algarve in winter.
What facilities does the beach have (bars, toilets, parking)?
Praia do Vau has beach facilities that operate mainly in peak season: bars and restaurants with terraces at the top of the cliff and beside the sand, with sea views, plus parasol and sunlounger hire. The toilets and foot showers are tied to the concessions and the service area, at beach level. Being an urban beach, restocking water, ice and supplies is just a few minutes away, in the city.

Parking is on the streets of the surrounding residential area, it's free and reasonably plentiful outside the summer peaks. The access ramp links the parking to the sand without steps, a rare bonus among the cliff beaches of the Barlavento, where many accesses involve long flights of wooden stairs.
Is Praia do Vau good for families with children?
Yes, Praia do Vau is a good choice for families. The wide sand gives room to set up base with a parasol and play, the ramp access makes life easier with prams and beach gear, and the calm residential setting leaves parents more relaxed than amid the bustle of Praia da Rocha. Lifeguard supervision in summer adds safety.
The thing to bear in mind is the sea: being open Atlantic, the water is cooler and can have swell. On rougher days, keep children in the gentle breaking zone and within the bathing flag. Those travelling with small children who want warmer, calmer sea will find it in the Sotavento, but as a beach day in Portimão, the Vau does the job well.

To plan a proper holiday with kids, our Algarve with children guide helps you choose areas, calm beaches and suitable homes. And if you want to combine the Vau with the buzz of Portimão, there are water parks and family activities a short drive away.
What to do near Praia do Vau?
Praia do Vau is the ideal starting point for exploring Portimão and the western Barlavento, with everything just minutes away. To the east, Praia da Rocha offers its enormous sands, the lively seafront and the Fort of Santa Catarina. To the west, the village of Alvor and its estuary are worth a whole morning's stroll along the boardwalk over the salt marsh.
Walking the cliff boardwalk
One of the best free things to do is the wooden boardwalk that runs along the top of the cliffs between Praia da Rocha and the Vau, with viewpoints over the sea and sandstone formations. It's a short, flat trail, lovely in the late afternoon to catch the golden light over the bluffs, and it links Praia da Rocha to the Vau without climbing a single step.
Boat trips and caves
From Portimão marina and Praia da Rocha, boat trips set off for the coastal caves, including the famous Benagil cave, and dolphin-watching outings. It's the most beautiful way to see the sandstone coast by sea, with several nooks only reachable by boat or kayak.
- Praia dos Três Irmãos and Alvor — sand and rocks to the west, minutes from the Vau (see the Praia dos Três Irmãos guide).
- Portimão's historic centre — fish restaurants, the Sardine and the riverfront.
- Portimão marina — starting point for boats, dolphins and kayaking.
- Alvor and the estuary — the boardwalk over the salt marsh and the fishing village (see the Alvor guide).
For a wider range of ideas beyond the sand, it's worth pairing the beach with the village of Alvor and Portimão's riverfront. From the Vau, you can fill a week without repeating a single outing.
Where to eat near Praia do Vau?
Near Praia do Vau, you eat mainly at the beach restaurants and bars at the top of the cliff and at beach level, with grilled fish, seafood and dishes of the day with sea views. These are quieter places than those on the Rocha seafront, with a good beach-lunch feel. A few minutes away, Portimão's centre and the riverside area hold the most varied offer.
Portimão is, in fact, the home of grilled sardines — the city celebrates them every year and the riverfront is full of places serving freshly grilled fish at honest prices. Anyone wanting to taste the best of the Algarve's sea will find pointers in our guide to where to eat fresh seafood in the Algarve.
Another advantage of renting a home nearby is having your own kitchen. Buying fresh fish at Portimão market and grilling it on the terrace, or simply making breakfast on no schedule, makes all the difference to the budget and the pace of the holiday. It's a saving that rarely makes it into the sums, but it weighs on a week-long stay.
Where to stay near Praia do Vau?
To stay near Praia do Vau, the two most practical bases are Praia da Rocha and the city of Portimão itself, both a few minutes from the sand. Praia da Rocha concentrates apartments with sea views and everything on foot; Portimão offers more affordable homes and the convenience of services, market and transport on your doorstep. From either, the Vau is a short drive or walk away.

Praia do Vau or Praia da Rocha: which to choose?
The choice between Praia do Vau and Praia da Rocha depends on the kind of holiday you're after. Praia da Rocha is Portimão's great urban beach: vast sands, a seafront full of bars and restaurants, nightlife and everything on foot. The Vau is its calm neighbour: the same municipality and the same coast, but with a residential feel, fewer people and a more intimate beach between cliffs.
- Choose Praia da Rocha if you want buzz, restaurants on foot and nightlife.
- Choose Praia do Vau if you prefer quiet, calm sands and a neighbourhood feel.
- Stay between the two and you get the best of both worlds within minutes.
- Want warmer sea? The Sotavento (Tavira, Monte Gordo) has warmer water.
In practice, staying in Portimão or Praia da Rocha lets you switch between the two atmospheres depending on the day — calm mornings at the Vau, lively late afternoons at the Rocha. If what matters is the contrast between coasts, the Barlavento vs Sotavento guide clarifies the differences in sea, scenery and pace between the two sides of the Algarve.
