The best sunset in the Algarve is seen from the west-facing cliffs of the Barlavento, and Cabo de São Vicente, in Sagres, is the westernmost point of mainland Europe — the last place on the mainland where the sun sets over the Atlantic. A few kilometres away you'll find Ponta da Piedade, Praia do Amado or the Sagres fortress; further east, the Ria Formosa and the barrier islands offer a softer dusk, over still water.
This list gathers ten real places, spread across the Barlavento, Centre and Sotavento, with the orientation, the distance to Faro Airport and the best time for each.
Where do you see the best sunset in the Algarve?
The best sunset in the Algarve is seen on the coast of the Barlavento, where the cliffs face west, over the open Atlantic. Cabo de São Vicente, in Sagres, is the reference point: being the south-western tip of the European continent, it's the last place in mainland Portugal to lose the sun. But it's not the only one — there are memorable dusks in Lagos, Alvor, Albufeira and Tavira.
The simple rule is orientation: west-facing points see the sun plunge into the sea; points facing east or south see the golden light bathe the landscape instead. In the Sotavento, where the coast looks more south and south-east, the dusk is won over the Ria Formosa and the barrier islands, with the still water reflecting the sky. The ten choices below cover the three coasts and several kinds of setting — cliff, cape, ria, rooftop and boat.

It's worth checking the exact sunset time on the day of the visit and arriving with time to spare, especially at the most famous spots, where parking runs out in summer. Next, ten places by coast, with what each one has of its own.
Sunsets in the Barlavento and in Sagres
The Barlavento concentrates the most spectacular sunsets in the Algarve because the whole coast from Sagres to Lagos faces the open Atlantic. They're tall cliffs, clean air and a horizon with nothing to block the sun — the ideal setting to watch the disc drop into the sea.
1. Cabo de São Vicente, Sagres
Cabo de São Vicente is the westernmost point of mainland Europe and the most iconic sunset in the country. From the top of the cliff, about 75 metres above the sea, you watch the sun drop into the Atlantic without any obstacle, beside the historic lighthouse. It's about 6 km from Sagres and around 87 km from Faro Airport, at the tip of the Costa Vicentina. Tip: arrive 45 minutes early in summer — the car park fills up and the wind is strong, take a jacket even in August.
2. Sagres Fortress and Ponta de Sagres
A few minutes from the cape, the Sagres Fortress occupies a rocky point surrounded by ocean on three sides, tied to the Sagres School of Infante D. Henrique. It's a wider sunset, with the cliff jagged and the sea beating below. As it has visiting hours, check the closing time; if it's already shut, the road and the viewpoints around it give equally open views to the west.
3. Ponta da Piedade, Lagos
Ponta da Piedade, in Lagos, is the postcard of the golden cliffs and the stone arches of the Algarve. Late in the afternoon, the ochre rock lights up with the low light and the lighthouse crowns the headland. It's about 3 km from the centre of Lagos and some 63 km from Faro. Climb down the steps to the water before dusk and go up to the viewpoint for the golden hour — or do it by boat, from Praia de Dona Ana.
4. Praia do Amado and Arrifana, Costa Vicentina
On the Costa Vicentina, Praia do Amado and Praia da Arrifana are wide-sand surf beaches, facing west, where the sun falls right into the sea and lights up the waves. The Arrifana has the added bonus of the amphitheatre cliff and a few cafés up top for a drink at dusk. They're wilder, windier beaches — perfect for those who flee the crowds and want the dusk almost all to themselves.
The common denominator of the Barlavento is the west-facing cliff: bring a warm layer, firm footwear for the rock and arrive early to secure your spot. At any of these points, the best light isn't only in the instant the sun touches the sea, but in the twenty minutes that follow, when the whole sky changes colour.
Sunsets of the Centre and the cliffs
The Centre of the Algarve, between Carvoeiro and Albufeira, gives more accessible cliff sunsets, a short distance from the biggest accommodation areas. The coast here curves between south and west, so the sun sets over the sea or just beside it, with the light outlining the honey-coloured cliffs.
5. Algar Seco and the Carvoeiro Boardwalk
Algar Seco, in Carvoeiro, is a labyrinth of rocks sculpted by the sea, linked to the town centre by the Seven Hanging Valleys path and the wooden walkway over the cliff. Late in the afternoon, the stone takes on warm tones and the Carvoeiro viewpoint, right above the beach, fills with people watching the sun go down. It's about 44 km from Faro and a few minutes on foot from the centre — ideal for combining dinner and sunset in the same outing.
6. Albufeira viewpoints and Praia da Falésia
Albufeira has several high points over the bay — from the Pau da Bandeira viewpoint to the Aveiros area — where you watch the sun fall over the sea to the west, with the white town in the foreground. Praia da Falésia, between Albufeira and Vilamoura, offers kilometres of reddish cliff that the low light transforms; it's one of the most photogenic beaches in the Algarve at dusk. Albufeira is about 26 km from the airport, which makes it a practical base.
The advantage of the Centre is the proximity: you can be on the beach, climb to the viewpoint for the dusk and dine in town without big journeys. Make the most of the hour before sunset to go down to the beach and the following half hour for the view from above.
Sunsets of the Sotavento and the Ria Formosa
In the Sotavento, the sunset is calmer and more horizontal, reflected in the still water of the Ria Formosa and the salt marshes. As the coast looks more south and south-east, the sun doesn't dive into the sea head-on, but the low light over the lagoon, the salt pans and the boats creates mirror scenes worth the trip.
7. Tavira and the Santa Luzia Marsh
Tavira gives a townscape sunset: from the top of the castle, from the Roman Bridge over the river Gilão or from the riverfront, the golden light sets the façades and the hipped roofs aglow. A few kilometres away, in Santa Luzia — the octopus capital — and in the neighbouring salt pans, the dusk reflects in the water of the tanks and the mounds of salt. Tavira is about 31 km from Faro and is the ideal base for the authentic Sotavento dusk.
8. Ilha de Tavira and Praia do Barril
For a sunset over the Ria Formosa, catch the little boat or the little train to Ilha de Tavira or Praia do Barril, with its anchor graveyard. On the ria side, the water mirrors the fiery sky and the barrier islands are almost deserted at the end of the day. Check the time of the last boat back — you don't want to be on the wrong side of the ria after dark.
The Sotavento dusk calls for time and calm: swap the dramatic cliff for the serene lagoon and stay until the blue hour, when the whole ria turns purple and deep blue before night.
Watching the sunset from the sea: boat and rooftops
There are two ways to lift a sunset in the Algarve: see it from out on the water, on a boat trip, or from up on a rooftop. Both swap the crowded viewpoint for an angle few people have.
9. Sunset boat trip in Lagos or Albufeira
The late-afternoon boat trips set off from the marinas of Lagos, Portimão and Albufeira and take you to the cliffs of the Benagil cave and Ponta da Piedade with the light already low. Seeing the stone arches and the caves lit up in gold, from the sea towards land, is a setting you can't get from any viewpoint. Book ahead in summer and check whether the trip includes the approach to the caves.
10. Rooftops and beach bars at dusk
Several hotels and beach bars in the Algarve have rooftops and terraces facing west, from Praia da Rocha to Vilamoura and Alvor. In Alvor, the ria and the wooden bridge over the marsh give one of the softest dusks in the Barlavento. The advantage is joining the dusk to a drink and a seat; arrive before sunset, because the front-row tables fill up early.
Whether by boat or by rooftop, the idea is the same: gain a different angle and stay for the blue hour. These two points close the list of ten and show that, in the Algarve, there's always more than one way to watch the sun go down.
The best time and season for the sunset?
The best time to photograph the sunset is the so-called golden hour — the hour before dusk — followed by the blue hour, the 20 to 30 minutes after the sun goes down, when the sky turns violet and deep blue. Those minutes after dusk are often more beautiful than the sun itself on the horizon, especially over the Ria Formosa and the cliffs.
The time the sun sets changes a lot over the year in the Algarve. At the peak of summer, it's around 9 pm; in spring and autumn, near 7.30–8 pm; in winter, around 6 pm. Arriving 30 to 45 minutes early secures a spot, parking and time for the golden hour.
| Season | Month | Approximate sunset |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | Dec–Jan | ~5.30–6 pm |
| Spring | Mar–May | ~7–8.30 pm |
| Summer | Jun–Aug | ~8.30–9 pm |
| Autumn | Sep–Nov | ~6–7.30 pm |

As for the season, autumn and late spring offer the best balance: long days, often dramatic skies and far fewer people than in August. See the calendar of when to go to the Algarve to choose the right time for your trip.
Where to stay for the best sunsets?
To catch these sunsets without a rush, the best thing is to sleep nearby. Those who want the dramatic Barlavento stay in Lagos or Sagres, a few minutes from Cabo de São Vicente and Ponta da Piedade. Those who prefer the convenience of the Centre choose Albufeira or Vilamoura, both a short distance from the viewpoints and from Praia da Falésia. For the calm dusk of the ria, Tavira is the right base in the Sotavento.
In our inventory there are apartments and studios with a pool in Albufeira and Vilamoura, perfect for couples who want to come back from the cliff and take a dip before dinner. A studio with a pool in Albufeira or a 1-bedroom apartment with a pool in Vilamoura leave you minutes from the Centre's viewpoints, with the advantage of your own kitchen for a drink on the balcony at the blue hour.
