Cabanas de Tavira is a fishing village pressed against the Ria Formosa, with a wooden boardwalk along the water and its beach on the far side of the channel, on a barrier island reached by boat in two minutes. It sits 4 km from Tavira and belongs to the same municipality.
It is small, it is flat, and it is one of the few Algarve bases where you need a car for nothing at all — which makes it unlike anything on the Albufeira side. This guide explains the areas, what changes when your beach is on an island, and what renting here really costs, with the figures from the 4 homes we have in the village.
Why stay in Cabanas de Tavira?
Cabanas solves something almost no Algarve village solves: it gives you a big beach without the crowd and without forcing you into a car. The village is a strip of low houses facing the lagoon, with a wooden boardwalk serving as the main street, fish restaurants on one side and water on the other.
The difference from the towns on the Albufeira side is one of scale and pace. There are no clubs here, no apartment towers and no traffic — there is a channel, boats crossing it, and a white-sand beach on the far side that runs for kilometres without a single building.
There is also the price argument. The median for our homes in Cabanas is €45 a night, against an Algarve median of €48 and €61 in Tavira, 4 km away. You sleep cheaper than in the town next door and you keep the lagoon at the door.
The beach is on an island: how you cross
This is the point to understand before booking. The Cabanas beach is not the water you see from the boardwalk — that is the lagoon, a tidal channel. The beach is on the Ilha de Cabanas, the barrier island that closes the lagoon, and you get there by boat.
The crossing is short, on the order of two minutes, and in summer the boats run continuously through the day. Off season the service is thinner and follows the tide and the demand, so it is worth checking times at the quay on the day itself. On the island side there is sand in both directions, with practically nothing built on it.
In practice this means two things. First, the beach is not a five-minute walk with a flip-flop in your hand: you have to allow for the crossing and the timetable. Second, the beach is far better because of it — that strip of water filters the crowd, and it is what explains a beach this size still being quiet in August. It is the same principle as the other Ria Formosa islands.
Where to stay within Cabanas: the areas
The village is small and crosses on foot in ten minutes, but there are real differences between being on the lagoon front and being two streets up.

The simple recommendation: for a first stay, being less than five minutes from the boardwalk settles everything — quay, restaurants and grocer are all at hand, and the car may not leave the garage for a week.
A note on noise that nobody writes down: the lagoon front has terraces and, in summer, the street is audible until late. Two streets up the quiet is different and the walk to everything is the same. If going to bed early matters, ask for a home facing inland.

The reading is direct: Cabanas sits below the Algarve median and well below Tavira, 4 km away, where the median is €61. And the cheapest home we have here, at €32 a night, is a two-bedroom of 102 m² — the largest floor area of the set at the lowest price, which is rare. On amenities: 100% of our Cabanas homes have wifi, 75% air conditioning and 75% a washing machine. Half have a garage, and a quarter have a pool — not much, but consistent with a village where the water is fifty metres from the door.

Cabanas with children and without a car
Cabanas is one of the best Algarve bases for anyone travelling with small children, and the reason is geographic: it is flat, the lagoon front is closed to traffic and the channel water is calm and shallow near the bank.
The boardwalk takes a pushchair end to end, the restaurants all sit on the same line, and the boat crossing to the island is a plan in itself that children repeat without complaining. There is no daily logistics of loading everyone into a car to reach the sand.
Without a car it works too, with one condition: do the big shop when you arrive. There are grocers and restaurants in the village, but the large supermarket is in Tavira. What to do in Cabanas and around it
The village holds two or three days without leaving it, and the rest of the Sotavento is under half an hour away. A route that works:
- Ilha de Cabanas — boat from the quay and a whole day of sand, with kilometres to walk without seeing anyone
- The boardwalk in late afternoon — the tide coming in, the boats returning and the terraces opening
- Tavira — 4 km away, the Sotavento's town, with the Roman bridge and the scissor-roofed houses
- Praia do Barril — the anchor cemetery, on the far side of Santa Luzia
- Cacela Velha — the white village above the lagoon, less than ten minutes away by car

Two things usually left out that are worth the detour. Cacela Velha, which is the finest view over the lagoon in the whole Sotavento, and the Tavira market in the morning, which is where you understand what the region eats.
Cabanas as a base: what is nearby
Cabanas sits at the eastern end of the Sotavento, which puts it close to everything lagoon and far from the Barlavento cliffs. The table shows what is within reach.

By car the Barlavento is an hour and a half away — fine for a day, not for a routine. Without a car, the Algarve railway line serves Tavira and Monte Gordo, and the Sotavento guide shows what lies east.
A warning about tolls: the A22 is electronic and has no booths. Anyone hiring a car should check that the vehicle carries a transponder, because paying afterwards means a trip to the post office with the registration and the dates. The EN125 has no tolls, but takes longer.

If you would rather stay nearby but in another village, Santa Luzia is the cheapest in the Sotavento and gives access to Praia do Barril, Tavira has a proper town 4 km away, and Olhão has the best markets in the region.
Is Cabanas de Tavira worth it?
It is, for more people than you would think. Cabanas is the right base for anyone who wants a big beach without the crowd, for anyone travelling with small children, for anyone who does not want to drive on holiday and for anyone who wants to eat fish every day without paying marina prices.
It is not the right base for nightlife, shopping centres or postcard cliffs. That is the Barlavento, an hour and a half from here, and it is a different choice — the Barlavento or Sotavento guide compares the two sides without hedging.
The argument that usually decides it: in Cabanas you pay less than the Algarve median for a village with the lagoon at the door and a white-sand island opposite. That combination is hard to find anywhere else in the region. Anyone who wants the same spirit with a town around them will find it in Faro or Tavira, and anyone who wants the islands at their purest has Praia da Ilha de Tavira a few kilometres away.
